What You’ll Do
As a Surgical Tech Student, you’ll support the daily operations of the Surgical Services department while developing your clinical skills. After competency evaluation, you may perform all duties of a Scrub Technician under supervision. Key responsibilities include:
- Cleaning, sterilizing, and preparing surgical equipment
- Stocking supplies and maintaining readiness of surgical areas
- Setting up sterile instrumentation for surgical cases
- Scrubbing in for surgery under CST and RN supervision
- Demonstrating correct materials management (instruments, sponges, needles, etc.)
- Using safe and appropriate transfer techniques with sharps
- Performing required counts of surgical objects per policy
- Ensuring accountability and proper handling of surgical specimens
- Practicing OSHA‑compliant safety procedures to protect self and others
This role provides foundational experience in surgical services and supports your progression toward full certification.
Qualifications
What We’re Looking For
Licensure / Certification / Registration
- Actively enrolled in a formal training program to obtain Surgical Scrub Technician certification
- Enrollment in an accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program
- High school diploma or GED required
- BLS certification required (with annual recertification)
Experience
- At least three quarters of clinical experience demonstrating progress toward certification
- Clinically trained in surgical scrubbing
- Competency evaluation required by Autry Technology Center and the SMRMC Surgical Services Manager
Special Qualifications
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Typing and basic computer skills preferred
