The Application Architect – Workday Payroll is a senior enterprise role responsible for the design, governance, and optimization of Workday Payroll solutions supporting UHS’s highly complex, multi‑state, and multi‑entity healthcare environment.
This role also serves as the enterprise architectural authority for UKG Pro Workforce Management (WFM), including timekeeping, scheduling, accruals, labor rules, and workforce compliance across acute care hospitals, behavioral health facilities, outpatient sites, and corporate operations.
The role requires deep expertise in multi‑state taxation, union and non‑union payroll models, collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), and acquisition integration, ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance, and scalability during periods of growth and organizational change. The Architect partners closely with HR, Finance, Legal, Labor Relations, and Compliance teams to support payroll operations across a geographically distributed workforce with diverse pay practices and regulatory requirements.
The Architect ensures seamless alignment between UKG Pro WFM and Workday Payroll, translating complex time, scheduling, and labor rules into compliant payroll outcomes while supporting operational efficiency and workforce optimization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as the enterprise Workday Payroll Architect for UHS, defining payroll design standards across multiple states, legal entities, and business units.
- Design and maintain payroll configurations supporting union and non‑union populations, including CBAs, shift differentials, premiums, and retroactive pay.
- Ensure payroll compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including wage & hour laws, healthcare labor rules, and union agreements.
- Serve as the enterprise UKG Pro WFM Architect, defining standards for timekeeping, scheduling, accruals, and labor rules across all facilities.
- Design, configure, and govern UKG Pro WFM labor rules, pay rules, and schedules to support complex healthcare staffing models and CBAs.
- Lead Payroll and WFM strategy and execution for acquisitions, divestitures, and facility onboarding, including parallel testing and data conversion.
- Developed and maintained clear, up-to-date process documentation, standardizing procedures to support operational continuity, quality, and compliance.
- Architect and oversee payroll integrations with UKG Timekeeping, Benefits, Finance, and third‑party vendors.
- Own end-to-end WFM to Payroll data integrity, including punch validation, pay code mapping, retro calculations, and audit controls.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to HCM and Payroll Analysts, ensuring adherence to governance and best practices.
- Partner with HR, Finance, Legal, Labor Relations, and Compliance to resolve complex payroll issues and support audits.
Qualifications
Position Requirements:
Knowledge:
- 5 years of payroll architecture supporting multi‑state and multi‑legal‑entity healthcare organizations. Workday experience required.
- Bachelor’s degree required. *10 years of increasing technical IT experience along with clinical license may be substituted in lieu of bachelor’s degree.
- Payroll compliance for wage & hour laws, prevailing wage, union contracts, and healthcare‑specific regulations
- Payroll taxation across multiple states, localities, and reciprocity agreements
- Union payroll concepts including multiple CBAs, shift differentials, premiums, on‑call pay, and retro pay
- UKG Pro Workforce Management (WFM) architecture, including Timekeeping, Scheduling, Accruals, and Labor Rule configuration
- Advanced knowledge of UKG labor categories, pay rules, work rules, and scheduling patterns in a healthcare environment
- Wage & hour compliance as enforced through WFM systems (meal/rest breaks, overtime, premiums, rounding, and state-specific rules)
- Union and non-union timekeeping models, including rotating schedules, on-call rules, shift bids, and contract-driven time policies
- Payroll impacts of mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and facility onboarding
- Integration of Payroll with UKG Timekeeping & Scheduling, Benefits & deductions, General Ledger and Finance systems, and third‑party payroll vendors
- End-to-end data flow between UKG Pro WFM and Workday Payroll, including punches, calculated time, pay codes, and retroactivity
Skills:
- Enterprise payroll solution design and governance
- Translating complex labor agreements and state regulations into scalable Workday configurations
- Leading payroll system strategy during acquisitions and rapid organizational growth
- Advanced troubleshooting of payroll calculation, tax, and integration issues
- Enterprise WFM solution design, including standardization of timekeeping and scheduling practices across facilities
- Deep troubleshooting of time calculation, pay rule execution, and WFM-to-payroll integration issues
- Ability to partner with operational leaders to balance workforce efficiency, compliance, and employee experience
- Strong partnership skills with HR, Finance, Labor Relations, and Compliance leadership
- Documentation, audit support, and payroll controls design
Certifications:
- Workday Payroll Certification (US Payroll preferred)
- UKG Timekeeping or Scheduling certification (preferred)
