Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, sits with patients to provide a safe environment for individuals who need constant observation. The sitter will provide only basic care needed for activities of daily living and diversionary activities.
Responsibilities
- Constantly observes patients and ensures a safe environment at all times.
- Remains with the assigned patient(s) at all times; reports to the RN whenever leaving patient(s).
- Keeps RN informed of patient status and reports changes immediately.
- Offers bathroom assistance, feeding, liquids/snacks as ordered, repositions patients at least every two (2) hours and provides other assistance to ensure patient safety and comfort at all times.
- Cares for patients and family members in a kind and compassionate manner.
- Ensures assigned rooms are clean, orderly, free of clutter and ensures that the trash is emptied each shift.
- Removes unnecessary or unsafe items from the patient's reach.
- Ensures that the patient's call light is within reach at all times.
- Dresses appropriately for the hospital environment such as white uniform or scrubs.
- May be utilized to perform duties in the Discharge Care Center.
- Encouraged to participate in community activities on a volunteer basis.
- Participates in performance improvement (PI) initiatives, quality improvement teams (QITs), and root cause analyses (RCAs) as necessary.
- Reviews the Unit Communication Book on at least a weekly basis.
- Reviews Shands emails on at least a weekly basis and responds appropriately and timely.
- Supports research and the implementation of evidenced based best practices.
- Demonstrates the BEST Behaviors and the dimensions of Patient Centered Care during the performance of duties. - Performs all other duties as assigned by management within job scope.
Required Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Necessary Skills
- Ability to write/read in English.
- Knowledge of standard precautions.
- Ability to recognize emergency situations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and awareness of ethical and legal responsibilities.
