Overview
Under supervision of the Orthopedic Clinic Charge Nurse, the Technician Orthopedic is responsible for applying a wide variety of casts; applies, monitors, evaluates, and maintains various continuous passive motion equipment; sets up and maintains traction and/or suspension devices; and assists physicians in the operating room, Emergency Department, or Trauma Center. The Technician Orthopedic also maintains inventories, attends inpatient hospital rounds, and documents all procedures in a timely fashion.

Required Education
Under supervision of the Orthopedic Clinic Charge Nurse, the Technician Orthopedic is responsible for applying a wide variety of casts; applies, monitors, evaluates, and maintains various continuous passive motion equipment; sets up and maintains traction and/or suspension devices; and assists physicians in the operating room, Emergency Department, or Trauma Center. The Technician Orthopedic also maintains inventories, attends inpatient hospital rounds, and documents all procedures in a timely fashion.
Responsibilities
- Applies a variety of casts including cast braces, splints, and other Orthotic devices
- Changes dressings, removes staples and/or sutures, removes external fixtures, and evaluates skin condition
- Applies, monitors, evaluates, and maintains various continuous passive motion equipment (CPM) and its proper range of motion (ROM)
- Applies hinged orthosis equipment Sets up and maintains traction and/or suspension devices
- Assists orthopedic surgeons in the operating room, Emergency Department, or Trauma Center
- Maintains inventory of orthopedic supplies and devices Maintains and cleans all equipment and the cast rooms
- Sets each type of Orthosis in accordance with physician's orders
Required Education
- GED or High School Diploma
- Knowledge of universal precautions, orthopedic procedures and equipment, and medical terminology.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- CPR/BLS
- Two (2) years previous experience as a patient caregiver, preferably in an orthopedic related environment. Preferred Experience: Patient caregiver in an orthopedic related environment.
