Perform technical duties involving processing tissue for diagnosis by a pathologist. Performance of these duties involves the use of various instruments and immunohistochemical procedures, as well as immunefluorescence techniques. Assists in quality control procedures. Maintains and troubleshoots instruments. May also gross biopsy samples. Provide excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

• Prepare tissue by processing, fixation, embedding, cutting, staining, cover slipping and labeling for diagnosis by a pathologist. Evaluate slides before distribution. (60%)
• Perform special procedures for immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescense, enzyme, histochemistry, gross dictation, and digital imaging. After training, may assist with autopsy and associated procedures. (20%)
• Perform and document preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment. Troubleshoot equipment problems to effectuate repair and adjustment; this may include working with online tech support. (5%)
• Maintain, perform and document Quality Control. Follow safety procedures in the use of instruments and chemicals in accordance with laboratory standard procedures. (10%)
• Maintain specimen file and retrieval system. Compiles data for statistical reporting. Review hospital and laboratory quality plans. May work independently in special Histology. (5%)
• May assist in the training of new employees.
• Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory training.
• Adheres to the dress code, core values, policies and procedures, time and attendance guidelines and confidentiality agreement.
• Performs all other duties as assigned by management within job scope.
  
  

Qualifications

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED

Preferred Education: Bachelor's Degree in Science related field.

Required Licensure/Certifications: Florida Histotechnologist License.

Preferred Licensure/Certifications: National Certification.

Required Experience: 1-2 years. One (1) year specialized training in a NAACLS approved Histology program -OR-One (1) year working as a histotechnican/histotechnologist in a hospital laboratory.

Preferred Experience: Two (2) years experience in Histology.

Necessary Skills

• Knowledge of principles, methods, materials and techniques of histopathology.
• Identify tissue structures, cell components and their staining and labeling characteristics.
• Ability to perform assigned tasks according to prescribed procedures and to recognize and correct abnormal results that might affect the outcome of the diagnosis. Ability to recognize malfunctioning equipment and assist in making repairs. Ability to prioritize tasks and organize work flow.

• Ability to professionally and courteously interact with internal and external customers.
