What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plant Maintenance Supervisor position at UDF-MyScoop Branding?
Incumbent is responsible for the tactical day-to-day oversight of the manufacturing maintenance team and is responsible for supporting the operations of the Ice Cream Plant in Norwood, Ohio.
Provides oversight and direction to a staff of 13-15 technicians covering three shifts and works in partnership with the Plant Maintenance /Refrigeration Manager
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans and coordinates the day-to-day activities of a team of multi-craft maintenance technicians.
- Maintain plant quality performance standards, assuring compliance with all HACCP, FMSA standards in alignment with maintenance practices.
- Supports Manager in scheduling & oversight of ammonia and glycol refrigeration systems.
- Receive and manage work requests from a number of sources and frequently must communicate with others to determine the validity, priority, and method(s) of remedy.
- Assigns work orders based on priority of the job as well as the skill set and availability of the technicians. The supervisor must regularly review the progress of work, each individual technician’s back log and reassign or reprioritize as necessary to ensure the facility is safe and production goals are met.
- Provides technical support to the maintenance technicians as necessary.
- Expected to have a broad technical base of knowledge in areas of refrigeration, electrical power distribution, automated machinery and controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, conveyors, fluid processing equipment, motors and pumps.
- Interacts with equipment and parts supplier’s technical support staff to expedite troubleshooting and identify suitable substitutions or upgrades of parts.
- Where outside contractors and service personnel are involved, incumbent is responsible for ensuring their work does not interfere with production and is done in a safe and sanitary manner.
- Responsible for ensuring that work performed is done in an efficient manner, the materials and parts used are appropriate for the job and that once the work is completed the equipment or system is safe, operates or performs as intended, and is reliable.
- Will follow established programs, policies, and practices to produce safe quality foods that meet regulatory and company requirements.
- Will support the development, implementation, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of the SQF 2000 Food Safety System..
- Partners with the Plant Maint/Refrigeration Manager to maintain facilities and assets to meet regulatory guidelines, e.g. – USDA, FDA, OHSA, EPA, SQF. Expected to know what the relevant OSHA standards and plant’s written safety programs, and ensure technicians are capable to and knowledgeable of them and in compliance while performing their duties.
- Responsible for the relevant federal, state, and local (Metropolitan Sewer District) regulations and rules and ensure that work performed and conditions throughout the plant are compliant. Incumbent is expected to keep the plant engineer informed of any issues related to environmental compliance that he / she cannot or is unsure how to address.
- Other job responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing reports and reviewing equipment
- Some level of after-hours support for maintenance related issue that requires his / her supervision or expertise and answer telephone calls when not at work from technicians and / or system alarm
- Provides direction to the operation and maintenance of the Utilities (Air – Steam – Water – Special Attention to Ammonia refrigeration – etc.)
- Shares best maintenance practices with other UDF maintenance professionals by participating in semi-annual forums and establishing contacts for regular communications.
- Ensure parts availability in the dedicated stockroom at UDF to minimize equipment down-time, working with Vice President to validate all purchases that are outside the dollar amount determined for an addition authorization.
- Partner with leaders on implementation of equipment and manufacturing reliability – process – improvements (Six Sigma / lean) including leading change initiatives – planning – and facilitation of improvement project(s) completion.

People Management:
- Responsible to ensure maintenance technicians are trained and qualified to perform the work they are assigned and to conduct training or provide the recourse to ensure technicians are trained and in compliance with regulatory requirements for training.
- Trains maintenance staff, creating a solid training (SOP) procedure that will meet your personal requirement/UDF practices – including effective use of the computerized maintenance management system – Problem solving tools – risk and failure analysis – maintenance scheduling and analysis of maintenance related data and equipment histories.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- 4 - 6 years operational and management experience in food production environment
- Frozen food experience a plus
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in all phases of maintenance and repair to include mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and building maintenance continuous improvement objectives, boiler operation and maintenance,
- Journeyman level training or equivalent in training & experience required
- HVAC, Plumbing, and electrical certification highly preferred or corresponding experience
- Experience with Motor Controls – PLC preferred
- Experience with CMMS/7i preventive maintenance programs.
- Experience in troubleshooting and maintaining process control systems and software.
Computer/Technical:
- Ability to use all Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, & PowerPoint
- Previous experience with Production Planning systems preferred
Physical requirements
- Will work in office, manufacturing, refrigerated and frozen (sub freezing and below 0-degree environments)
- Must be capable of walking on wet and uneven surfaces and climb stairs frequently and climb ladders occasionally.
- Must be capable of standing and walking up to 50% of a workday
- Must be capable of lifting up to twenty-five pounds occasionally
- Must be capable of grasping objects with either full hand and manipulate small objects with fingers
- Must be capable of speaking, reading, writing, and hearing English
- Must be capable of donning a fully encapsulating chemical suit or entering confined spaces occasionally without experiencing claustrophobia
- Must be capable of occasionally climbing to a height of ninety feet using a permanently installed series of ladders on the outside of a building
- Must be capable of wearing a full-face respirator and achieving a gas tight seal
