What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Assistant - Archival Processing position at UCSB Library?
Students in the Department of Special Collections may be hired to assist in the physical and intellectual processing of manuscripts and audiovisual materials. These materials include posters, manuscripts, personal papers, ephemera, artifacts, as well as audiovisual materials such as videocassettes, film, open reel audio tapes, and cassettes. These materials are processed and arranged according to established archival guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creation of accession inventories and assisting in the preparation of finding aids, including data entry into spreadsheets and archival management systems
- Processing manuscript and archival collections including arranging, refoldering, reboxing, identifying, and weeding duplicates
- Basic conservation activities such as creating mylar sleeves for posters and photographs, preservation photocopying, and rehousing materials in acid-free enclosures
- Occasionally assisting patrons in using collections
- Other duties as assigned

Preferred Skills:
- Background in library-related work, general humanities knowledge, exceptional grammar and spelling skills, knowledge of a foreign language.
