Job Specifications: (Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required)

The Deaf/Hard of Hearing ESE Teacher is working with specific students within classrooms of UCP Charter Schools, that have or suspect to have intervention instructional needs related to Deaf/Hard of Hearing program.  Each teacher must believe that “all children can learn” and have a commitment and knowledge to differentiate instruction to allow all student to develop to their fullest potential. Additional knowledge/skills and abilities include:

  • Knowledge of Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP), early childhood development and the learning process.
  • Experience assessing children, collecting and using data to drive instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students and differentiating instruction.
  • Good communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to work cooperatively with parents and staff.
  • Experience writing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  • Experience interpreting for students who are DHH

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Supports a classroom environment that is highly structured and predictable utilizing physical classroom arrangement, clear routines and procedures, and the use of visual supports.
  2. Adjusts and uses communication at the correct level of symbolic functioning to meet the needs of the students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
  3. Provides direct instruction in functional communication skills and plans activities that are language-based and encourage communication opportunities for all students, including students with limited language or who are nonverbal.
  4. Provides direct instruction to hearing, Deaf, and Hard of Hearing students as related services.
  5. Uses a variety of information to determine the effects of learning experiences on student’s development and approaches to learning’s and adapts as needed. Collects data during instructional activities for all students. Maintains a portfolio with samples of students’ work, records observed progress, uses observational data to plan individualized and differentiated instructional strategies and appropriately follows Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  6. Supports creating a climate where students and staff have positive relationships with each other, are enthusiastic about learning and spending time in the classroom and are respectful of one another.
  7. Provides interesting and stimulating materials and instruction students' questions, concerns, and needs, provides instruction using many modalities, actively engages students, provides appropriate levels of support and creates an environment in which students feel safe and free to explore and learn.
  8. Fosters a relationship with families to support children’s learning and well-being.   Clearly communicates with families regarding students’ progress, actively involves family members in planning strategies for enhancing student’s progress and maintains a positive, collaborative relationship with students’ families.
  9. Uses technology to help support student learning and communication.
  10. Demonstrates attention to punctuality, attendance, deadlines (Individual Education Plan/Individual Family Support Plans expiration/review, progress reports, testing/assessment), compliance with policies and procedures, Code of Ethics, and exercises appropriate professional judgment and other elements of the Florida Educators Accomplished Practices.
  11. Provides interpreter services for students as determined by ESE IEP team.  
  12. Ensure and provide basic care giving duties (utilizing universal health and safety precautions) for students.
  13. Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications:

Minimum Experience:

  • 1-3 Years Teaching experience (including internship)
  • Experience working with students with DHH
  • Experience using instructional technology preferred.

Education and Training:  (or equivalent)

Bachelor’s Degree or Higher – Preferably in Exceptional Education or Elem. Education

AND

Florida Statement of Eligibility or Professional Teaching Certificate 

ESE/Deaf Hard of Hearing certification
