Position Summary

The Technical Director is responsible for safely and effectively producing all the scenery for the departmental production. Duties include budgeting for all scenery, producing technical drawings as needed, plan, coordinate, monitor, and participate in the creation, installation, operation and strike of department productions, events and rentals - ensuring a smooth, timely and efficient transition from artistic concepts and design ideas to the realization of artistic, production, and academic goals. They will work closely with the scenic designer to fully and successfully complete the scenery as designed for the production. The Technical Director is responsible for the structural integrity and safety of all scenic designs and will also train and supervise seasonal hires and student crews as well as provide management and technical services for theater rentals and non-academic projects.

Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the responsibilities and duties of professional technical director including the knowledge to engineer scenic elements and assure structural integrity and safety. (Required)
  • Must have the vision, hearing and dexterity to safely operate in a construction environment, operate hand and power tools, stage rigging and machinery. (Required)
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required by the production schedule, including nights, weekends and holidays. (Required)
  • Ability to work at heights using ladders and personnel lifts. (Required)
  • Ability to plan, integrate, organize, schedule, budget and supervise the preparation and presentation of theatrical productions in an educational and professional environment. (Required)
  • Possess expert knowledge and familiarity with the tools, equipment and systems associated with technical theater production; including scenery technology, theatrical stage rigging practices, costume construction and theater lighting and sound technology. (Required)
  • Ability to speak on a one-to-one basis and to groups, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to explain and demonstrate facilities, equipment and operations. (Required)
  • Basic Knowledge of Vectorworks and Lightwright. AutoCAD proficiency. (Required)
  • Ability to read and execute designer drawings, light plots and sound plots. (Required)
  • Skill in prioritizing staff job responsibilities in order of relative importance to complete work in a timely manner. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on projects with minimum direction. (Required)
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner and to perform tasks of equal priority efficiently under time constraints. (Required)
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, staff and guest artists. (Required)
  • Skill in management of equipment, space, material, staff and financial resources. (Required)
  • Demonstrate pride, professionalism and commitment to excellence. (Required)
  • Ability to effectively perform duties and tasks in a no smoking environment. (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. (Required)
