The Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences is an academic unit within the UCLA Division of Physical Sciences

Position Summary

Under supervision of Principal Investigators and Aerospace Engineers, this position interacts directly with department space research groups to administer Windows, Mac, and Linux-based user machines, web/data server rackmount systems, and related network infrastructure hosting a range of processing and storage hardware. Best practices and standards in system design are implemented to allow for constantly expanding databases and data processing. The position will coordinate software licensing that supports research activities (e.g. account and hardware/software lifecycle management, GitHub, YouTrack, SVN, VMWare, and other network administration), and additionally assist with software development and programming for multi-instrument multi-spacecraft missions and related projects, as-needed. The incumbent will be the point of contact for end users requiring assistance with any software or hardware IT issues, including faculty, staff, researchers, and students.

Qualifications

  • Scientific or engineering background, Working knowledge of VMware and Proxmox virtualization platform and administration (Required)
  • Advanced Windows, Linux and UNIX systems administration skills (Required)
  • Experience with system hardware components, including protocols (PCIe, SAS/SATA) and interfaces (M.2, RAM, fiber connections) (Required)
  • Knowledge of network and VPN administration and security practices, monitoring systems using SNMP, ansible, SMART, etc. (Required)
  • Experience with software development and deployment using containers and/or compilers, libraries, and makefiles, Familiar with satellite mission operations and data analysis, Relational database administration (MySQL, PostgresQL), Rust programming language experience, thermal simulations (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of networking including CIDR subnetting, firewall rules (both local tables and network ACL) (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise account management via LDAP (AD, FreeIPA, OpenLDAP), RBAC, and system-level implementations (SSSD, SELinux) (Required)
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux filesystems (ZFS on Linux, XFS, NFSv4), Linux hardware (LSI MegaRAID, storcli) and software (mdadm & ZFS) RAID (Required)
  • Understanding of performance and scaling issues for large datasets (100TB to multiple petabytes) (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of DevOps tooling and CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, Jenkins, and Docker orchestration (Required)
  • Attention to detail and troubleshooting skills, Good communication skills among various levels of organization, in groups or on individual basis (Required)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or equivalent relevant experience. (Required)
