What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dive Safety Officer position at UCLA?
The Office of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) ? Research Safety Divisions is an interdisciplinary team of safety professionals providing risk and safety services to the research community at UCLA. This includes programs/divisions such as Animal Safety, Biosafety, Chemical Hygiene, Controlled Substances, Dive & Boat Safety, Field Safety, Hazardous Waste Management, and Radiation & Laser Safety.
The UCLA Scientific Dive & Small Boat Safety Officer (DSO) serves as a system-wide expert in diving and boating activities for the UC Southern California Dive Consortium (SCDC) which includes UCLA, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside. The UCLA DSO is responsible for setting, implementing, and overseeing diving & boating safety policies for the Consortium along with the Diving Control Board. The DSO develops, coordinates, and conducts the courses for all scientific diving and boating classes for undergraduate students and new graduate students. The DSO participates as an advisor/consultant to international, national, state, and local committees related to diving safety to develop and review safe & effective scientific diving programs & practices and investigates and reviews diving accidents.

Required/Preferred
Certified diving instructor in active status (NAUI Scuba certification is preferred).
Required
Currently certified in CPR and Basic First Aid techniques and procedures.
Required
Trained in the administration of oxygen to injured divers.
Required
Demonstrated ability to establish priorities that will maximize the safety level within the diving program.
Required
Knowledge and skill in the use of proper maintenance of air compressors for filtration systems, scuba regulators, and other diving-related equipment.
Required
Depth certification up to 150 feet.
Required
Depth certification up to 180 feet.
Preferred
Certified U.S. Divers and Scubapro equipment technician.
Preferred
Excellent written and oral communications skills.
Required
Leadership abilities sufficient to command authority and enforce adherence to regulations while retaining the necessary diplomacy to command mutual respect between diving program members.
Required
Interpersonal skills at a level that will foster effective interaction with students, faculty, staff and Diving Control Board members.
Required
Knowledge and experience in budget analysis and preparation.
Preferred
Skills at using computers and database programs to maintain records, compile data and produce reports.
Preferred
Valid California Driver's License
Required
Valid California Boating Card.
