Postdoctoral Appointee – BIA Microelectronics: Advanced Detectors and Edge Computing

This position focuses on the research and development of novel radiation detectors and associated edge-computing circuits and algorithms for X-ray, particle, and nuclear physics experiments. The successful candidate will be a key contributor to a multidisciplinary co-design team spanning material science, computing, and electronic engineering, with the goal of enabling next-generation detector capabilities. Key Responsibilities: Capturing requirements and analyzing specifications for future detector systems Performing conceptual design and system-level optimization using emerging computing architectures and device technologies Developing and applying simulation and modeling tools for detector performance, characterization, and validation Providing technical feedback to guide intelligent on-detector/edge processing and device design within the broader project team This position involves close collaboration with researchers at Argonne National Laboratory and Northwestern University as part of the BIA microelectronics project. To learn more: Argonne to lead two microelectronics research projects under U.S. Department of Energy initiative | Argonne National Laboratory Position Requirements Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in field of physics, engineering, or a closely related field Demonstrated programming proficiency in C/C , Python, or another scientific programming language Comprehensive knowledge of imaging systems and/or semiconductor or solid-state detector design and simulation Experience with GEANT4 simulations and detector characterization is highly desirable Familiarity with data processing and analysis techniques is a plus Strong written and oral communication skills Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork Candidates with a strong interest in learning and further developing these skills are encouraged to apply.
