DESCRIPTION

Consistently ranked among the top graduate theatre training programs in the country, UC San Diego's Department of Theatre & Dance offers undergraduate degrees, MFA degrees in Acting, Dance, Directing, Design (Costume, Lighting, Scenic, Sound), Stage Management, and Playwriting, and a PhD in Theatre and Drama. The Theatre & Dance department also shares a close relationship with the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse, where MFA candidates are provided professional residencies.

Serve as costume shop foreman, as that term is commonly understood in the theatre industry, for the Department of Theatre and Dance. Act as draper/tailor for Department of Theatre & Dance. Organize fitting requests, shop meetings and tracking of rental garments. Serve as a back up to the Costume Shop manager during the academic season. Set work hours and standards, give work direction to costume construction staff. Set deadlines with the Costume Shop Supervisor. Assist with development of Department of Theatre & Dance projects and long-range equipment and supply needs. Maintain and supervise repair of all costume shop equipment and all other duties as assigned by production manager.

  • Must be amenable to a fluctuating work schedule. Some weekend and evening work required.

This position is a 100% career appointment for 9 months (typically mid September through mid June).

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in both professional and academic costume shops.

  • Thorough knowledge of costume construction and production, both men's and women's garments in modern and period styles. Thorough knowledge of the equipment and materials used in costume production.

  • Skill and experience in planning and tracking sizable production workloads. Ability to project production needs for simultaneous and overlapping productions with two producing organizations.

  • Experience and ability to coordinate the work of a large staff consisting of a variety of professionals and specialization's, providing strong, positive leadership.

  • Skill and ability to effectively interact in a professional and collegial manner with a wide range of people; students, faculty, professional designers, stage managers, staff and the general community.

  • Strong, proven organizational skills with the ability to meet demanding production schedules and accommodate changes and shifting priorities for both an academic and professional season.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly disseminate information in a variety of situations.

  • Excellent skills in interpreting designs, drawings and styles of costume design and an understanding of a variety of designer's methods, both students and professionals.

  • Thorough knowledge and adherence to shop safety standards and procedures.

  • OSHA 10 hour training certification

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $68,466 - $82,225 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.79 - $39.38

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
