DESCRIPTION

The Assistant Director, Nursing Clinical Practice & Professional Development provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the organization’s advanced-practice nursing teams, ensuring that nursing care across settings is grounded in evidence-based practice, regulatory standards, and consistent clinical excellence.

The Assistant Director leads and supports the inpatient Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) and Clinical Nurse Educators, who are responsible for establishing, maintaining, and advancing nursing standards of practice. This includes accountability for health center policies, nursing guidelines, product and equipment evaluation, and the development and delivery of nursing education that aligns with current evidence and regulatory expectations.

In addition, the Assistant Director oversees the inpatient Diabetes Nurse Educators and Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses (WOC). These specialty teams provide expert consultation for hospitalized patients and lead the creation, implementation, and standardization of specialty-specific policies, guidelines, education, and clinical products that support safe, high quality patient care.

The position collaborates closely with Purchasing and Supply Chain teams on product selection and managing vendor related backorders or issues. Through the Value Analysis Committee, the Assistant Director will work with frontline teams to ensure high-quality, cost-effective products are introduced into the organization. It also supports the development of policies, guidelines, education, and system wide implementation related to these product selections.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inpatient Nursing Standards — Advance and maintain evidence-based standards of practice across units.
  • Policy & Guideline Oversight — Ensure clinical policies and nursing guidelines remain current, consistent, and aligned with regulatory requirements.
  • Education Strategy — Direct the development and delivery of nursing education that supports competency, safety, and professional growth.
  • Product & Equipment Evaluation — Lead evaluation and standardization of clinical products and equipment used in patient care.
  • Specialty Consultation Services — Guide CNS, Diabetes Nurse Educator, WOC teams, and others in delivering expert consultation and specialty care for hospitalized patients.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in Nursing and eight or more years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of experience, education and training.

  • Current California RN license.

  • BART, or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART w/in 6 months of hire date.

  • Four or more years in a formal Nursing Education role, with demonstrated expertise in the development, delivery, and evaluation of clinical education programs.

  • Broad academic knowledge and applied background in hospital management, clinical education and training. Proven ability to apply concepts to develop and implement programs to meet nursing practice standards and improve education best practices.

  • Organizational skills include simplifying, increasing efficiency, managing multiple priorities and delegating tasks to ensure deadlines are met. Proven ability to set goals, implements training programs, evaluate results, and promote and develop others.

  • Strong Leadership skills to motivate others and inspire staff to develop their clinical expertise, master their roles, and identify specialties.

  • Ability to solve problems when no precedent exists. Demonstrated skill to continuously evaluate current states and identify viable options for resolution.

  • Skills to work collaboratively with all levels of clinical staff, and peers in local, national and international settings. Ability to work creatively with others and solicit and incorporate their ideas when appropriate and assess information critically and apply it appropriately.

  • In depth knowledge of nursing, organization, HR and UC policies and processes, and all accreditation, licensing, and compliance requirements. In depth knowledge of all relevant nursing industry laws and regulations at the local, state, and federal levels.

  • Knowledge of all clinical education and relevant health care information technology and ability to notice technological inefficiencies and improve usage and improvement of such technology.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Nursing administration certification.

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).

  • Strong operational and clinical experience.

  • ACLS and/or ART.

  • Current UC San Diego Health employee.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $168,800 - $341,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $80.84 - $163.41

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
