Description

Under supervision, the Clinical Researcher will perform examining the genetic causes of pediatric brain diseases, such as epilepsy, autism and mental retardation. Duties include consenting and recruitment of human subjects, obtaining and evaluating medical records, MRI's, and performing intake evaluations from clinicians throughout the world. Maintain direct communications with physician collaborators located worldwide. Work closely with counterparts at Rady Children's Hospital and the Rady Institute of Genomic Medicine. Collect patient blood, saliva and other biological material (brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid, sperm, cadaveric tissues). Coordinate the processing and storage of these samples for subsequent genetic experiments. Interact with electronic medical records systems. Coordinate all Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications for submission to the human subjects committee office for protocol approval. Maintain patient database for each protocol. Provide work direction in the duties of other lab personnel and students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Theoretical knowledge of human genetics, genealogy, and/or developmental neuroanatomy. Knowledge of disease, pathogenesis and syndromology.
  • Two years of clinical research experience, preferably working directly with Human Research Protection Programs in designing and implementing research protocols.
  • Experience in working in genetics or genomics, interacting with computational biologists and bioinformaticians, using online databases such as gnomAD, UCSC Genome Browser and Ensembl.
  • Demonstrated experience in communication with practitioners around research studies, gathering clinical data, and fostering collaborative relationships. Knowledge of research study policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of genetic issues and experience discussing with families.
  • Experience in sterile-technique, Universal Precautions and molecular biology techniques.
  • Familiarity with genetic causes of developmental brain diseases, epilepsy, and mental retardation in children.
  • Excellent record keeping and data management skills.
  • Experience managing computerized databases, and ability to troubleshoot and optimize systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain and record accurate information and details to ensure proper completion of forms and reports.
  • Strong computer skills including experience with Windows, Mac OS, word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and presentation, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat.Experience managing computerized databases, and ability to troubleshoot and optimize systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively. Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, maintain workflow, and work productively in meeting critical deadlines and milestones.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret medical literature.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy and flexibility. Ability to work independently and/or in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community and in a lab environment that interacts with a large number of and diverse group of research/technical personnel and other laboratories.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of statistics and previous experience managing patient databases.
  • Experience working with biological specimens, e.g. blood, saliva, fetal tissues.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
  • Must be available to work variable schedules and overtime as needed. Some travel may be required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $60,301 - $97,008 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.88 - $46.46

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
