UC San Diego Health Sciences encompasses UC San Diego Health, the region's only academic health system, UC San Diego School of Medicine, one of the nation's top research-intensive medical schools, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southern California's first public school of pharmacy, and Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. The division of Medical Education within the UC San Diego School of Medicine consists of the following units: Undergraduate Medical Education, Admissions & Student Affairs, Diversity and Community Partnerships, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education & Faculty Development, Simulation Education, Physician Assistant Education, Anatomical Services, Business Affairs and Educational Technology. The division supports the education, training and co-curricular activities of approximately 560 medical students, 90 physician assistant students, 1000 residents and fellows as well as the faculty, physician and healthcare providers at UCSD’s School of Medicine, its' Medical Centers, and affiliates.

The Associate Director of Preclinical Curriculum at UC San Diego School of Medicine (SOM) supports the School of Medicine's core courses. This position works in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME). The incumbent oversees the administration and operations of health profession education programs which may include teaching and learning activities, program curriculum, learner scheduling, maintaining databases, tracking learner compliance, and program accreditation. Develops, prioritizes and implements strategies that improve program quality, processes, and compliance.

Under the direction of the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, with guidance from the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, the incumbent provides administrative leadership and operational oversight of the preclinical curriculum of the medical school. The role serves as a key member of the UGME leadership team and is responsible for ensuring the effective execution and coordination of the preclinical program, partnering with evaluation and technology teams to support evaluation processes and continuous quality improvement.

The incumbent supervises staff, leads process improvement initiatives, and partners with faculty, course directors, and institutional stakeholders to support curriculum delivery and meet accreditation standards. This position exercises a high degree of independent judgment in managing day-to-day operations, resolving issues, and advancing programmatic priorities.

Additional responsibilities include staff development, workflow optimization, data-informed decision-making, and support of strategic initiatives related to curriculum innovation and program growth. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Nine (9) years of related experience or a Bachelor's degree in a related area plus five (5) years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of the health professions education industry, administrative analysis and operations research. Knowledge of assigned program requirements and curriculum.
  • Knowledge of department, organization, HR and university policies and processes. Current knowledge of relevant industry federal, state and local laws and regulations including national accrediting organizations and state and federal licensing and regulatory offices.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in training and guiding employees on educational techniques. Motivates and inspires staff to improve the health profession education services.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines in a complex, challenging environment. Ability to organize assigned staff and unit operations in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Effective communication skills with peers, learners, faculty, and other education program coordinators / managers.
  • Skills to evaluate issues and identify solutions within defined procedures and policies. Demonstrated ability to solve problems and suggest solutions through critical thinking process.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to explain technical health profession / education concepts, actively listen, persuade, advise, and counsel.
  • In-depth knowledge of educational software and technologies to promote a wide-range of teaching and learning goals.
  • Proven ability to recruit faculty and integrate learners which requires high-level planning and coordination skills, the ability to think strategically and communicate complex information to multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related area.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $88,000 - $161,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $42.15 - $77.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
