Position Summary:
The Biological Sciences Student Affairs (BSSA) office provides support and guidance to undergraduate students throughout their time at UCI. Student Affairs provides academic advising to School of Biological Sciences majors regarding degree requirements, School and University policies and procedures, course planning, degree progress, and campus resources and opportunities. BSSA advisors also provide pre-health professional program counseling to students from all majors. This office coordinates and delivers new student advising and orientation, and oversees programs to support sub-populations within the School (e.g. student researchers, 1st generation college students, pre-health students, new freshmen/transfers, etc.). The office staff also facilitates the BioSci Pre-med Postbacc program, which supports the academic preparation of students pursuing a career change into health professions.
Applies professional student services concepts in the School of Biological Sciences Student Affairs Office. Provides academic advising and pre-health advising to undergraduate Biological Sciences students and to pre-health students from across UCI. Advises and provides recruitment and admissions support for the UCI Bio Sci Pre-Med Postbacc program. . Works on moderately complex issues and administrative tasks including . Receives assistance on more complex advising and administrative issues.

Required:
• 1-3 years of experience assisting students in academic planning or navigating a university. • Experience working with diverse populations in a variety of situations. • Experience using common software and university-specific technology to review and update records; draft and edit communications; and collaborate virtually with students and colleagues.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases. Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills including empathetic listening, discretion with sensitive information and ability to adapt to many personalities and sometimes challenging interactions. Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Ability in problem solving and critical thinking skills. Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Knowledge of University processes and procedures. Understanding of University rules and regulations.
