Job Summary

This position supports this Departmental purpose through the functions of timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation and/or processing, and shipping for analysis on various body fluids, tissues, and fecal material – primarily in the Clinical Pathology Sendouts Lab. Functions also include equipment and general maintenance, supply inventory and ordering, clerical duties and quality assurance in the pre-analytical area of the clinical laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Experienced in accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation and/or processing, and shipping for analysis on various body fluids, tissues, and fecal material.
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen handling, processing, storage, and shipping requirements to meet policy, procedure, and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as EMR, email, hospital Incident Reporting system (e.g., RL Solutions), and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of LIS sufficient to perform specimen inquiry and other functions (batching, test cancellation, printing orders and specimen labels, etc.).
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and to exercise appropriate judgment when setting priorities.
  • Ability complete work to meet required turnaround times, suspense dates and deadlines.
  • Adequate familiarity with medical terminology (test names, specimen types, patient diagnoses, etc.)
  • Possess effective verbal communication skills to answer questions from internal and external customers in clear and concise manner.
  • Possess written communication skills to write clear emails, EMR messages, and reports and to convey information appropriately.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Clinical Pathology Send out Lab.
  • Ability to maintain legible and accurate records.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal Instructions, and to use good judgement in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
  • Ability lo resolve problems within scope of job duties and knowledge.
  • Ability to maintain composure and flexibility In an evolving environment.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and to assist colleagues as needed.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow and adhere to HIPAA regulations.

Department Overview

The Department of Pathology and laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation inpatient care, population health, education, technology and research. UC Davis is leading the way in diagnosing, treating, and reducing the burden of disease. This position sets the highest standards for professionalism and competency in providing high-quality patient-centered diagnostic and therapeutic care, customer service, and education to patients within UCDHS and its affiliates. Our laboratories are licensed by the State of California, certified by CUA, accredited by College of American Pathologists (CAP), AABB, and Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), and located in three distinct facilities: Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion (SESP); Pathology Building; and the Specialty Testing Canter (STC).

The department is one of UCDMC's largest ancillary services departments. The Department of Pathology and laboratory Medicine's mission is to provide high-quality patient physician services, to maintain the excellence of the educational programs, and to perform scholarly research and development. These objectives are to be met within the limits of resources available with emphasis on cost effectiveness and innovation.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Must be able to work overtime as needed and rotate weekends, holidays and “on call” hours per departmental staffing policies. Must be able to work variable shifts to provide 24-hour coverage.
