University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS)


Building upon the pioneering treatment and international leadership in interdisciplinary care for complex rheumatologic diseases, education, innovative research, clinical trials, and strong clinical services, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is seeking an outstanding, compassionate, and visionary Board-Certified academic leader as the next Division Director of Rheumatology. This individual will provide strategic, clinical, academic, and administrative leadership for the Rheumatology Division while advancing excellence in patient care, education, research, and scholarly activity.


The Division Director will maintain an active clinical practice and oversee the diagnosis, treatment, and longitudinal management of patients with a broad spectrum of rheumatic and autoimmune diseases, including but not limited to systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, vasculitis, osteoporosis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, sarcoidosis, and related conditions. The successful candidate will guide the development of innovative, patient-centered care models that improve outcomes and quality of life while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.


This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to lead the strategic growth of the UAMS Division of Rheumatology within a collaborative, well-resourced structure. Working with UAMS leadership, the Director will advance cutting-edge patient-centered care and discovery, provide mentorship and leadership to faculty and fellows, and strengthen the clinical footprint.


Division Highlights

  • The division currently has full-time faculty physicians, fellows, and a dedicated team of administrative personnel; with 84 IM and Med Peds residents in the department.
  • Collaborative relationships/affiliations with Central Arkansas Veterans Health System (CAVHS) and Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.
  • UAMS Clinic has access to CT scanning, MRI, and a complete battery of immunologic tests for the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and collagen vascular disease.
  • As part of the teaching hospital, the Rheumatology Clinic at UAMS is staffed by board-certified rheumatologists recognized among Arkansas’s top physicians for diagnosing and treating rheumatic diseases.
  • A new state-of-the-art infusion center at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute greatly expands our ability to provide rheumatoid arthritis patients with convenient access to new and innovative therapies unavailable elsewhere in the state.
  • Outpatient rheumatology services are provided to patients across the entire state of Arkansas and the surrounding region (western Tennessee, Western Mississippi Eastern Oklahoma, Southeastern Missouri, and Louisiana).


Candidate Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency.
  • Successful completion of an accredited 2–3-year Rheumatology fellowship.
  • Board certification in Rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or equivalent.
  • Eligibility for or possession of an unrestricted Arkansas medical license.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience or strong potential for academic and administrative leadership.
  • Established commitment to medical education, mentorship, and scholarly activity.
  • Exceptional diagnostic and clinical decision-making skills with comprehensive knowledge of rheumatologic diseases, treatment modalities, and current clinical guidelines.
