Job Description

Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Executive, the Vice President of Evidence-Based Practice & Professional Development develops and maintains infrastructure for the application of evidence-based knowledge to improve nursing practice and related outcomes.  Collaborates and consults with nursing leaders and clinical nursing staff to assure ABN professional nursing practice standards compliance. Responsible for the development of standardized educational initiatives across the enterprise organization.  Oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, protocols, and standards in alignment with evidence-based practice. Responsible for advancing nursing practice and innovation through the establishment of shared governance councils across the enterprise to develop shared decision-making councils, unit practice councils, evidence-based practice, and nursing research. Works closely with leadership and staff in successfully executing initiatives throughout the organization and (when applicable) ANCC designation programs (such as Magnet® and /Pathway to Excellence®) and Beacon Awards. Responsible for prioritizing initiatives across the health system, guiding implementation of appropriate clinical changes, providing educational programs to achieve system goals, and administering professional development and transition to practice programs focused on retention. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities

 

  1. Provides senior leadership support to the Chief Nursing Officers and enterprise nursing leadership teams.
  2. Collaborates with leadership and staff to promote a culture of evidence-based practice, nursing research, innovation, excellence, and recognition.
  3. Collaborates with clinical nurses and leadership to develop and embed the nursing professional practice model into nursing practice throughout the organization.
  4. Creates and implements innovative ways to transform organizational culture, systems and services.
  5. Seeks opportunities to improve department or interdepartmental processes, resulting in more efficient or effective services.
  6. Works with  all system-level leaders responsible for improving quality care and patient safety, to design complex system-level process improvement initiatives and maintains oversight of the collecting and analyzing of process improvement data as it relates to NDNQI, patient experience, nursing satisfaction, professional certification and BSN rates. Disseminates data to appropriate units and assists with action planning when benchmarks are not being attained.
  7. Assumes responsibility for submitting applications, interim monitoring reports, and documents for professional nursing designation programs (initial and re-designation) including business plan and annual budget related to program expenses.
  8. Serves as a liaison with all departments in the system to promote nursing excellence.
  9. Oversees shared decision-making council structure (unit and organizational) and mentors clinical staff in leadership skills to ensure successful shared decision structures and processes.
  10. Leads nursing recognition programs, such as Daisy, nursing certification day, nursing week, etc.
  11. Maintains current knowledge of applicable policies and procedures as evident in performance.
  12. Supports Patient Experience efforts to ensure a robust, integrated and standardized plan exists with nursing and the health care team for improvement in the patient experience.
  13. Analyzes the effectiveness of recruitment and retention efforts, create improvement plans with CNOs and HR leaders.
  14. Implements and sustains a robust nursing roadmap for professional development.
  15. Creates partnerships with Deans and Directors of schools of nursing that offer mutually beneficial outcomes for schools and System facilities.
  16. Provides a placement plan for nursing students - to maximize potential for recruitment and incrementally increases the number of students with experiences throughout the health system.
  17. Standardizes a Transition to Practice program across all facilities.
  18. Creates opportunities for nurses to lead or participate in research, quality and performance improvement, and evidence-based practice projects.
  19. Supports enterprise-wide nursing and clinical quality transformation strategies to reduce variation, waste, cost, and error while improving outcomes, access, and patient satisfaction.
  20. Supports quality related initiatives and provides strategic direction for the Centers of Excellence, Policies & Standards Resources, and clinical quality improvement infrastructure.
  21. Partners with physicians, nursing, and administrative leaders to achieve optimal performance in publicly reported quality, safety, and patient experience metrics.
  22. In collaboration with the leaders of quality across the system, leads quality-related accreditations and Centers of Excellence certification efforts, including identification, preparation, and execution of accreditation strategies.
  23. Provides input for enterprise-wide clinical quality improvement education, including facilitation of evidence-based best practice dissemination.
  24. Facilitates strong clinical relationships across network sites and fosters multi-departmental and multi-institutional collaboration to strengthen quality performance.
  25. Responsible for overseeing, directing, standardizing nurse competency validation processes across the system.
  26. Serves as a key member of the UAB School of Nursing Partnership and supports all efforts to grow activities, initiatives, projects, and dissemenations.    

 

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Clinical Quality Improvement, or related field required.  Doctorate preferred.  Ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience in nursing, clinical quality, graduate-level education, or healthcare performance improvement with a demonstrated record of successful enterprise-wide quality initiatives.  Work experience may not substitute for education requirements.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations

Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Alabama Board of Nursing required.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Approximately four (4) to ten (10) direct reports.
