Job Summary
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer of UAB Health System, the Executive Vice President, Finance serves as a key executive and highly influential leader within the organization. Charged with the critical responsibility for reviewing, planning, and executing the health system’s operational finance strategy, this leader partners closely with the CFO and senior executives across the enterprise to drive financial performance, strategic alignment, and long-term sustainability. The EVP, Finance plays a central role in advancing UAB Health System toward a more integrated, system-wide approach to finance and corporate services—strengthening enterprise governance, consolidating processes and systems, and enabling the organization to support its academic, clinical, and research missions at scale.
The EVP, Finance provides strategic leadership and operational oversight across a broad spectrum of accounting and finance functions for UAB Health System. This executive oversees the health system’s controllership and treasury functions, with accountability for enterprise financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, general accounting, accounts payable, payroll, internal controls and regulatory compliance, and comprehensive audit management. The role also encompasses cash management, capital planning, debt financing, supply chain financial oversight, and leadership of complex, enterprise-wide special projects.
In addition, the EVP, Finance plays a critical leadership role in advancing system integration, including the harmonization of financial operations and the alignment of core platforms such as the organization’s EMR (Epic) and ERP systems. Through close collaboration with clinical, operational, IT, and administrative leaders, this executive drives standardization, scalability, and financial discipline for UABHS.

Additionally, they will demonstrate the ability to work closely with physicians, staff, and other members of the team to solve complex, operational challenges through consensus, collaboration, and alignment.
The successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization and with external clients and customers. She/he will be a “systems thinker” and comfortable working in a highly matrixed environment.
Additionally, the EVP will demonstrate high emotional intelligence, strong verbal and written communication, and the ability to translate complex financial data into meaningful narratives for non-financial leaders, physicians, boards, and external partners. The EVP, Finance will have the following principal responsibilities:
· Coordinates development and implementation of the strategic and tactical plans designed to meet the current and future financial requirements of UABHS while also strengthening and growing the resources of its member organizations both individually and collectively.
· Establishes annual operating and capital budgets with a balanced approach to ensure UABHS’s overall financial success and maintain positive bond ratings, with a careful focus on long-term cash flow and debt capacity.
· Provides executive oversight of UABHS's treasury functions and balance sheet activities, including cash, debt and investment management. Plans, coordinates, and oversees all activities with respect to the incurrence of debt. Responsible for UABHS's activities related to capital allocation and growth.
· Provides executive oversight, including the maintenance of adequate system-wide internal accounting controls and the accuracy of system-wide monthly annual consolidated financial statements prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), related statistics, and other financial reports.
· Coordinates the annual audit for UAB Medicine.
· Supports strategic capital planning and facilitates capital committee discussions and decisions.
· Creates and drives a shared services structure for Payroll, Accounts Payable, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Decision Support across UAB Medicine.
· Participates as a member of the senior leadership team in a variety of committees.
· Maintains knowledge of current health-related legislation, developments in managerial theory and practices, improvements in healthcare delivery systems, and other related practices and systems.
· Collaborates closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, IT, and quality improvement, to develop and implement strategies that align with our overall business, quality of care, patient experience, strategic and financial objectives.
· Stays abreast of industry trends, policy changes, and emerging technologies to drive innovation and stay ahead of the curve.
· Communicates effectively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment and successful outcomes.
· Supports executive leadership in special projects and initiatives, as needed.

Qualifications
Candidate Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business is required; Master’s degree preferred
· An active or inactive CPA is required
· Fifteen (15) years of progressive leadership within an integrated health system (ideally an academic health system), including experience leading finance teams in a complex healthcare environment
· Experience leading and implementing performance improvement initiatives across the health system is required
· A strong foundation of public accounting experience is preferred
· Must demonstrate excellent communication skills and fully embrace finance and accounting best practices.
