What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Ethics Consultant position at UAB Medicine?

The clinical ethics consultant works in tandem with patients, families, and the front-line, multidisciplinary
team as the first responder for ethics case consultation and preventative ethics.
- Provides both individual and group clinical ethics consultation, working collaboratively with
- healthcare providers, patients, and surrogate decision-makers on ethical concerns.
- Provides prompt responsiveness, ensures ongoing communication with individuals involved
- in the case, and follows through on all of the deliverables of the consults.
- Assists in the development and delivery of educational activities regarding clinical ethical
- issues for physicians and staff. Actively involved in Schwartz Rounds and Ethics Case
- Conferences hosted by the Clinical Ethics program.
- Serves as an active participant on the Ethics Committee. Routinely reviews and develops
- institutional ethics policies and procedures consistent with current ethical norms in
- collaboration with the Ethics Committee as requested.
- Engages in preventive ethics activities and initiatives as needed.
- Performs administrative activities related to the Clinical Ethics program as needed;
- including but not limited to: Accurate and timely reporting of data into the ethics consultation
- database and oversight of the 24/7 on-call schedule.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
- Current licensure commensurate with relevant degree required.
- Master's Degree in a healthcare related field, including but not limited to Ethics, Nursing, Philosophy, Social Work, Theology, etc..
- Evidence of coursework in healthcare ethics.
- Two (2) years of substantive clinical ethics consultation experience preferred. Experience may substitute for education requirement.
- Healthcare Ethics Consultant Certified (HEC-C) credential required within five (5) years of employment.
