The Striper is responsible for the precise layout, marking, and application of pavement markings, including traffic lanes, parking stalls, handicap symbols, and directional arrows, on finished asphalt and concrete surfaces. This is a skilled, specialized role essential to completing commercial, retail, and municipal paving projects.
Reports To: Paving Foreman / Project Manager
Key Responsibilities
1. Layout and Execution
- Execute detailed layout of pavement markings according to engineered drawings, blueprints, and specific client requirements (e.g., ADA compliance).
- Operate and maintain striping equipment (paint machines, thermo-applicators, walk-behind line stripers) to ensure proper material flow and uniform application thickness.
- Apply various pavement materials, including paint, epoxy, and thermoplastic, ensuring adherence to curing times and surface preparation standards.
- Conduct precise marking for complex elements such as stencils, crosswalks, stop bars, and directional arrows.
2. Quality Control and Compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to all required dimensions (line width, spacing, length, and placement) per local codes, ADA regulations, and approved plans.
- Monitor paint and bead consumption to ensure quality and control material costs.
- Maintain a clean, crisp finish on all markings, including proper curing and debris removal.
- Adhere to all company safety protocols and OSHA standards related to material handling, road safety, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
3. Equipment and Materials Management
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of striping machines and related equipment (air compressors, spray guns) to ensure optimal performance.
- Manage and organize inventory of paint, beads, thinner, stencils, and safety cones, communicating needs to the Foreman.
- Load, unload, and transport equipment and materials safely to and from job sites.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience operating professional striping equipment and performing layout for commercial parking lots and/or municipal roadways.
- Technical Skills: Proven ability to accurately read and interpret striping blueprints, site plans, and parking standards (including ADA requirements).
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy materials (e.g., bags of thermoplastic), stand, bend, and work outdoors in various weather conditions for long shifts.
- Licensing: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (CDL preferred but not always required).
