Summary

This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, George W. Bush Presidential Library. The Technician will perform duties associated with scanning, indexing, and description of digital images produced from original archival records; creation of technical and structural metadata; administration and data entry of information into one or more networked databases/systems; ensuring archival materials are prepared for eventual publication in the National Archives Catalog.

As a METADATA TECHNICIAN, you will:

  • Create metadata to support digitization projects, establish intellectual control over digitized resources, and prepare resources and metadata for submission to archival collection information databases and other system for eventual publication on the National Archives Catalog.
  • Administer the Library's collection information databases and spreadsheets; perform data cleanup as necessary; and serve as primary liaison to overarching database administrators and application vendors.
  • Work on large-scale imaging production projects in an archival context, but may also provide indexing, metadata creation, and data entry for a range of other projects, including digitization for exhibits, routine imaging, special requests, and other moderately complex digitization projects.
  • Perform data entry of metadata records into a variety of databases, digital asset management systems, and other applications, using specialized software tools that support automated and manual systems of indexing of digital records.
  • Support archival digitization as captured by contractors, staff and interns. The incumbent may help coordinate textural digitization workflow as part of the digitization work plan and provide quality control for completed digitization projects.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A probationary or trial period may be required. Continued employment is contingent upon supervisory certification that continued employment will benefit the Federal Service; the certification will occur no less than 30 days before the end of the probationary/trial period.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so.
  • Go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form i-9. Federal law requires verification of the identity and employment eligibility of all new hires in the U.S.
  • Obtain and use a government-issued charge card for business-related travel.
  • The work is basically sedentary, however some long periods of standing and lifting of materials, supplies and moderately heavy boxes (may weigh up to 50 pounds) will be performed.

For the GS-09, specialized experience is defined as one year of experience at the GS-08 level, or equivalent, that is directly related to the position, and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position includes:

  • Experience with metadata and formatting in relation to archival and/or artifact collections. AND
  • Preparing digital imaging formats for submission into a variety of systems. AND
  • Making image enhancements and/or modifications to digital images.

  • This position is a Term appointment. A Term appointment is a non-status appointment to a position in the competitive service, made for a specified period of time. The initial appointment will be greater than one year, and can be extended for no more than a total of four years.
