The following are the duties of this position at the GS-07. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Archives Technician, you will:
- Provide written and oral "first-line" reference assistance and consultation, responding to all forms of inquiry concerning NARA's broad range of archival holdings, in original or surrogate format, by using complex finding aid systems and related archival sources, in both electronic and analog formats.
- Pull and refile records according to NARA policies and procedures.
- Review information about records prior to making them available to researchers, ensuring that access restrictions are being followed.
- Independently monitor the use of records by the public and address customer usage that threatens the safety of records or limits access.
- Participate in the digitization efforts of archival holdings for public access following broad NARA guidance and procedures.

- A one year probationary period may be required.
- Must successfully complete a background investigation.
- Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.

- Physical demands may include climbing caster-equipped step ladders, moving heavy carts of records, and handling boxes of records stored up to 15 feet above the floor and typically weighing up to 50 pounds, occasionally more. The work may also demand considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending and lifting.
