Maintenance Mechanic Leader.

Duties

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

• Lead the station's safety program for all maintenance operations, conducting safety briefings and hazard assessments, serving as a safety instructor, enforcing PPE and operational limits, maintaining OSHA-audit-ready safety documentation, and tracking team compliance with the Hearing Conservation Program, including annual audiometric testing and ensuring availability of required PPE.
• Lead and coordinate maintenance crews across all refuge units, assigning tasks, setting the pace, directing daily work activities, verifying quality and timeliness, coordinating equipment and vehicle sharing, reporting work status and delays, and ensuring co-equal attention to tasks and needs across all O'ahu refuge units.
• Plan, lay out, and complete preventive and deferred maintenance on facilities and real property assets, independently interpreting drawings and blueprints, and performing multi-trade work including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, roofing, concrete, HVAC, welding, painting, and similar maintenance responsibilities from initial layout through completion.
• Operate heavy equipment, CDL vehicles, and agricultural tractors with mowing implements, executing small-to-medium earth-moving and vegetation-management projects, transporting equipment between refuge units, maneuvering in close tolerances, securing cargo and selecting safe, legal routes, and performing mowing and related operations typical of year-round tropical growth conditions.
• Operate, maintain, and adjust water-control structures; manage wetland and upland habitat conditions; repair and replace fencing and gates; and conduct mechanical and chemical invasive plant control, ensuring all pesticide or herbicide applications, storage, and disposal follow applicable Federal and Staterequirements.
• Manage maintenance administration and documentation, supporting budget tracking, ensuring proper disposition of purchase and fuel receipts, maintaining project and equipment records, collecting and entering monthly fleet and heavy-equipment utilization data, balancing substantial office-based computer work with field duties, serving as the primary point of contact with the Regional Fleet and Heavy Equipment Manager, and supporting annual deferred-maintenance funding prioritization processes.
• Provide training, mentoring, and qualification tracking for maintenance personnel, conducting equipment-operation and safety training as authorized (including agricultural tractors, skid steers, excavators, and forklifts), maintaining accurate records of team member training qualifications, monitoring re-training cycles, and providing general mentorship to staff, volunteers, and youth participants.
• Support procurement and contract oversight in alignment with agency policy, preparing purchase requests, performing purchase card transactions and reconciliations, securing materials and supplies, assisting with contractor oversight, and-when authorized and qualified-performing collateral duties related to contract administration, including serving as a Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) to ensure contracted services and materials meet required specifications.

Physical Demands

• Considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. Considerable energy is needed working in small confined spaces or elevated areas, and operating equipment over rough surfaces. Location of the tools and controls/attachments frequently requires working in awkward or strained positions. Requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50-100 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. This requires standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and cramped positions.
  
  

Working Conditions

• Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%). Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, falling from ladders or scaffolding, electricity, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common. Incumbent may also be exposed to energized circuits, electrical shock, burns, electrical rotary devices, cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals.
• Work is regularly exposed to the possibility of bites, cuts, scrapes, bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment in adherence to applicable laws, rules, and regulations, such as: protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items.
• Serious injury may result from getting caught in operating equipment, or from collisions with automobiles when operating on or near public roads.
