Duties
- The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a licensed independent practitioner with advanced education and national certification who provides evidence-based care for a population of patients
- The Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) practices in Mental Health (MH) to provide a full range of services emphasizing quality - timeliness - and the advancement of the Veterans Affairs (VA) mission
- The PMHNP provides advanced clinical practice - consultation - and management
- The nurse in this role serves as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) for the Mental Health Service Line (MHSL) at the CVAHCS
- The Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) PMHNP responsibilities include medical record review - follow-up on medical consultation requests - writing prescriptions - ordering medications - and ordering laboratory tests
- Conducts Mental Health and Tele-Mental Health clinics and manages patient care within those clinics through the use of Tele-Mental Health/Tele-Home technology
- This PMHNP demonstrates a thorough knowledge of Major Psychiatric Diagnoses and substance dependence/abuse
- The incumbent will provide crisis intervention when indicated including evaluation - assessment - triage - initiation of/support in Emergency Detention procedures - and disposition of patients experiencing behavioral health emergencies
- As a licensed behavioral health prescribing professional - is required to provide \"on-call\" consultative services during evenings - nights - and weekends - on a rotating basis with other qualified MHSL staff
- While \"on call\" the incumbent is available to respond - by phone and in person as indicated by the situation - to the medical center to provide \"on call\" consultative behavioral health services timely
- These services include evaluation - diagnosis - assessment - triage - and supporting the emergency department - medical units and MHRRTP in the disposition (especially recommended level of care) for patients presenting with behavioral health emergencies during off hours
- Major duties and responsibilities of the position: Uses advanced clinical judgment to independently provide evidence-based treatment to Veterans with acute or chronic mental illness including use of psychotropic medications - psychotherapy - and other modalities.- Provides patient and family education on medical/MH conditions - preventive measures - and prescribed treatments.- Demonstrates leadership and engages in collaboration with other MH and specialty care professionals while involving Veterans and their families (as appropriate) - in treatment plan development.- Assesses and adjusts the plan of care as needed to achieve optimal patient outcomes.- Counsels and treats patients with substance use disorders.- Orders and interprets labs - tests - and diagnostic studies.- Initiates referrals and consults to specialty services.- Exemplifies the ICARE core values of-Integrity - Commitment - Advocacy - Respect - and Excellence
