Summary

This position serves as a Pipefitter within the Facility Management Service Center of the James J. Peters VA Medical Center - located in Bronx - New York. The primary functions include working with pipes and fittings from a range of high pressure to low pressure steam. This is an OCA and applicants will be sent weekly to the panel for review.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Related experience includes: Safely and independently performing pipefitter work assignments; Reading and following blueprints and specifications; Estimating accurately the time and materials required to install - repair - or replace equipment or components; Soldering and brazing piping systems; Properly selecting and using tools - parts and materials to accomplish a task quickly - neatly and safely; and Using hand and power tools of the trade - i.e. - pipe threader - sewer augers - acetylene torch - reciprocation saws - corded and battery-powered drills - pipe cutters - pipe wrench - hammer drills - and other common hand tools of the trade. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly - Installation - Repair Interpret Instructions - Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Measurement and Layout Technical Practices Troubleshooting Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Duties

  • Work Schedule: 8:00am to 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Pipefitter/PD00000 and PD03912A Physical Requirements: Employee will make repairs and installations from ladders - scaffolding and platforms - and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places
  • Employee will be standing - stooping - bending - kneeling - climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions
  • Employee will frequently handle - lift - carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds
  • Occasionally items may weigh more than 50 pounds
  • Work is done inside and outside - and is usually dirty - dusty - greasy - and smelly
  • There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions
  • The employee is exposed to the possibility of strains - cuts - scrapes - bruises - burns - and infections
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones
  • Employee may be required to work in areas that have asbestos containing materials and will - therefore - be required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and other equipment to prevent possible asbestos exposure
  • You will be responsible for completing respirator training - fit testing and training in the proper use and maintenance of general PPE.

Salary : $34 - $40
