Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
  • rather - they are to have a ""scope of practice"" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Service Chief or Line Manager
  • A service chief or line manager physician must demonstrate the following: Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty
  • and Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain
  • These programs would include - but are not limited to medical practice - professional standards - personnel issues - and quality and performance improvement
  • Preferred Experience: Five years of prior clinical experience
  • Progressive leadership experience within prior 5 years of experience - with increased levels of scope and responsibilities
  • Current academic rank of Associate Professor or higher preferred

Duties

  • The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System in Cleveland - OH is seeking one full-time MD/DO Service Chief to supervise the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service
  • The Chief - Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS) at VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System (VANEOHS) - provides leadership and oversight for clinical and administrative operations across all PALMS programs - providers - and sites of care
  • The incumbent is a Board-Certified Physician responsible for and providing operational and supervisory oversight for over a large interprofessional service of over 120 clinical and administrative personnel over eighteen sites of care across northeast Ohio
  • Eligible candidates must be board certified in either Anatomic Pathology or Clinical Pathology and must have five years of prior clinical experience
  • Prior clinical administrative experience is preferred
  • The Service Chief will collaborate with the Laboratory Manager - Administrative Officer - and supervisory technologists to provide oversight over the clinical and administrative functions of the service
  • In addition - the Service Chief will collaborate with outpatient clinics - inpatient units - and the Comprehensive Cancer Center to ensure that seamless and coordinated care is provided to patients
  • The Cleveland VAMC is a large tertiary care academic medical center serving all of Northeast Ohio with academic affiliations with University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC) - MetroHealth Hospital - and the Cleveland Clinic healthcare system
  • Qualified applicants will receive an academic appointment through Case Western Reserve University SOM

  • Operational and Administrative Responsibilities of the Chief - PALMS include - but are not limited to: Maintains full responsibility for all professional - management - and administrative aspects of PALMS - and the service-aligned personnel and clinical programs
  • Develops and maintains annual budgets for Service resources - staffing - training - and travel - with effective resource allocation
  • Oversees quality and efficiency of clinical programs - research - and other activities related to the roles of pathologists - technologists - pathology assistants - and other service personnel
  • Implements efficient administrative processes based upon analyses of productivity - clinical needs - and ongoing monitors of performance metrics - including but not limited to provider availability - workload - productivity - and clinic management
  • Develops and maintains indicators and monitors for clinical performance of staff - assuring credentialing - privileging and professional competence meet or exceed expectations
  • Ensures adherence with clinical and training program standards as guided by accrediting bodies - regulatory requirements - and VHA directives and guidelines
  • Supports professional research - including designing research and program quality initiatives - and consulting to offer research guidance and stimulate new research directions
  • Serves on Medical Center - VISN - and/or National VA committees and Task Forces - and serves as a consultant to other medical center programs and services
  • Develops proposals and strategic initiatives to improve care - access and efficiency in clinical service delivery
