Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200 -000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) - b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) -OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs)
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
  • rather - they are to have a ""scope of practice"" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Additional Requirement: Must at all times maintain their board certification in Internal Medicine
  • Preferred Experience: At least 3 years experience working as Hospitalist
  • At least 3 years experience in teaching and supervising Internal Medicine Residents

  • Physical Requirements: Incumbents must be able to perform the duties as a Physician
  • Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs.) - light carrying (under 15 lbs.) - use of fingers - both hands required - ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously - near vision correctable at 13"" to 16"" to Jaeger 1 to 4 - Specific visual requirement 20/50 one - 20/100 other (glasses permitted) - hearing (aid permitted) - mental and emotional stability - ability to hear conversational voice (aid permitted) - protracted or irregular hours of work
  • This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking - standing - and sitting
  • The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing
  • The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium - dementia - or psychiatric disorders
  • The incumbent must be a mature - flexible - sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations - able to shift priorities based on patient needs

  • The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director is a physician who works under the leadership and direction of the Chief of Medicine Service (MS) at the Captain James A
  • Lovell FHCC in North Chicago - IL
  • The incumbent will provide administrative and clinical oversight and will be actively involved in the decisions that support the function and goals of the Internal Medicine Residency Program
  • The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director (Program Director) is responsible for the overall planning - implementation - management - and evaluation of the internal medicine residency program
  • The Program Director will ensure the program maintains accreditation standards and fosters an environment of academic excellence and professional development
  • This position requires coordination with various departments - faculty members - and administrative staff
  • The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director must possess specialty expertise and at least three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience - or qualifications acceptable to the Review Committee
  • This individual must at all times maintain their board certification in Internal Medicine - maintain time in clinical practice - and commit to creating and maintaining \"an educational environment that promotes high-quality care - patient safety - and resident wellbeing
  • The Program Director will perform a variety of complex tasks and will lead and direct work of others
  • He/she must be familiar with administrative procedures - quality measurement - regulations related to the practice of medicine - The Joint Commission
  • This position is 50% administrative and 50% clinical (Hospitalist)
  • Major Duties: Ensure the residency program adheres to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements
  • Maintain accreditation of the residency program by meeting and exceeding accrediting bodies' requirements
  • Oversee the educational curriculum and clinical training of residents
  • Arrange didactic activities - including lectures - workshops - and seminars
  • Oversee the evaluation and feedback system for residents - including direct observation - faculty assessments - and self-assessments
  • Prepare for and participate in internal and external program reviews
  • Promote a learning environment conducive to professional development and academic excellence
  • Provide effective leadership and governance for the residency program
  • Ensures clinical care is delivered in accordance with hospital and VHA policy - meeting - or exceeding community standards and VHA national benchmarks
  • Supervise and mentor residents - providing guidance on academic and career development
  • Provide opportunities for faculty development to enhance teaching skills and professional growth
  • Develop and manage the residency program budget
  • Participate in scholarly activities - including research - publications - and presentations
  • Oversee the recruitment and selection process for new residents
  • Coordinate the interview process and selection committee meetings
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday
