Duties

- All Physician Assistants are responsible for completing all mandatory training annually within a timely manner

- Clinical The PA practices general medicine with a focus on community-based outpatient clinical care
- Approximately 90% of the PA's time is dedicated to developing and maintaining an interdisciplinary approach to the direct care of general medicine clinic patients
- The PA independently follows his own panel of general medicine patients - functioning as their primary care provider
- This primary care/gatekeeper role is incumbent with a high degree of responsibility and independence
- The PA's assessment skills and breadth of knowledge must be superior
- In addition - providers must be a highly effective communicator in order to negotiate with consultants at the VAMC regarding the triaging of patients he/she refers
- These skills are required at a level that exceeds that of VAMC-based physician assistants
- All Physician Assistants need to follow departmental and VHA policies for leave and attendance and will work within Title 38 appointment guidelines
- Leave should be requested as far in advance as possible (generally - at least 45 days) to minimize disruption to patient care - in accordance with established leave and clinic cancellation policies
- Any unscheduled absences must be properly communicated - and patients should be rescheduled within a timeframe defined by WTVAHCS policy
- All progress notes must be entered within 48 hours of the patient's encounter
- Address quality metrics appropriately - meeting professional standards of care
- All medical records - documentation - orders - and administrative tasks should be completed in a timely manner per VHA and facility policy
- Prohibited abbreviations should not be used
- Work collaboratively with other providers in the section
- Engages in continuous process improvements in support of the high reliability organization
- Quality of care should be able to meet professional standards at all times
- May be assigned special clinic reviews/projects as needed

- PAs will work within their privileges at all times - unless necessitated by an emergency
- Administrative Because of the highly integrative approach used in community-based outpatient clinics - Physician Assistants must work closely with his/her colleagues and must serve as a leader in developing processes to improve care and satisfaction
- Research Enroll patients in active Ambulatory Care research protocols and completes follow-up visits with required studies
