Summary

The purpose of the position is to operate a variety of motor vehicles to transport patients - staff - cargo - and mail in support of facility operations. Work may require operating vehicles over local - intercity - and interstate routes.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 06/15/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Drive Safely Interpret Instructions - Specifications (mobile equipment operations) Motor Vehicles Without more than normal supervision Work Practices Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent must frequently handle objects weighing up to 40lbs and occasionally more - with assistance - endure prolonged periods of driving - and perform minor emergency repairs such as tire changing - during his/her duties. Incumbent is required to work away from their home clinic in all types of weather and traffic - conditions while performing his/her duties. He/she is exposed to danger of serious accidents and operates the vehicles in congested traffic conditions on regular and interstate highways at slow and fast speeds. These roads also include complicated interchange systems. Must deal and interact with patients with a variety of physical and mental disabilities. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts - bruises - strains - etc. - when loading/unloading cargo. This position is subject to overtime work.

Duties

  • Operates various types of vehicles to and from medical facilities and designated stops
  • Adheres to transport schedules while operating in a safe manner and complying with all applicable traffic laws
  • Completes vehicle inspections and transportation logs
  • Ensures timely and accurate delivery of pickup - inspects all items for physical condition - quantity - status - and obtains signatures as needed
  • Maintains and submits required paperwork and logs associated with cargo/mail duties
  • Performs vehicle-related safety and compliance responsibilities in support of transportation operations
  • Conducts pre-trip and pos-trip inspections of assigned vehicles to ensure safe operating condition
  • Identifies and reports mechanical issues to service level leadership/supervisors
  • Keeps the Fleet/Transportation Supervisor fully informed of any variations in job assignments
  • Completes and maintains required trainings
  • Provides interim support to other FMS/Engineering Personnel as assigned
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of vehicles - and vehicle accessories
  • Knowledge of all VHA - VISN Medical Center Policies and Procedures and processes
  • Skill in Microsoft platforms
  • Meets the needs of customers while supporting the Medical Center and Service missions
  • Communicates and treats customers (patients - visitors - volunteers - and all Medical Center staff) - in a courteous - tactful - and respectful manner
  • Drivers License: Must posses valid state driver licensure
