Summary

This position will operate within the Veteran Transportation Service (VTS) program within the Greater Los Angeles - CA (GLA) VA Health Care System. To serve as Motor Vehicle Operator (MVO) - providing transportation to veterans and their spouses who live in suburban areas of the GLA VA Health Care System and surrounding satellite clinics catchment areas. Driver is required to maintain a current California Department of Transportation CDL License OT) Class "B" with Passenger "P" endorsement.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 01/30/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibilities are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Drive Safely Interpret Instructions - Specifications (mobile equipment operations) Motor Vehicles Reliability And Dependability Without more than normal supervision Work Practices Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The Motor Vehicle Operator must be in good physical condition when performing driving and related services - particularly - when driving for extended periods of time and distance. The Motor vehicle Operator must be vigilant and alert to cope with adverse traffic and weather conditions. Requires drivers to exert physical - operating - turning - backing - and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads or LARGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE/PATIENTS. Light physical effort in reaching - bending - turning - or moving hands - arms - feet - and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort in the frequent handling of objects in excess of 50 pounds. Considerable physical efforts may be required to change tires - make limited emergency repairs - such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways and first echelon maintenances. Patient transport vehicle driver must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle - which involves physical exertion and frequent stooping - bending - and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair and gurney patients - often with no assistance. The Motor Vehicle Operator drives in all types of traffic and weather conditions - and is exposed to potentially hazardous situations and serious accidents. ***Skill in the operation of a multi-passenger - wheelchair equipped vans - and have a current valid California Department of Transportation (DOT) Class "B" with Passenger "P" endorsement Commercial Drivers License (CDL).*** Employee works mostly outside - is exposed to dirt and fumes - and to the possibility of cuts and bruises - and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle. Operates vehicle in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent) - and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Employee will drive in heavy urban to rural traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.

Duties

  • Driver is required to maintain a current California Department of Transportation CDL License (License in resume or attached)
  • This is an open continuous announcement (OCA) - resumes will be sent to hiring manager on an as needed basis
  • Major duties include: Driving duties and related services operating various types of and classes of motor vehicles including buses - trucks - vans - patient transport vehicles such as ambulances and wheelchair buses - passengers and shuttle vans
  • Provide non-emergent - safe - reliable transportation of eligible veterans and cargo
  • Verify passengers against manifest - as well as - complete such paper work as trip tickets and records indicating the amount and type of fuel dispensed
  • Adhere to all State - local - and installation traffic laws and ordinances
  • Maneuver the vehicle in and out of constricted areas including narrow city streets and congested parking lots which includes maneuvering the bus around sharp corners
  • Operate and provide preventative maintenance checks and services for patient transport vehicles (e.g
  • monitoring fluid levels - replacing air filters and interior lights - checking tire pressure and hose connections - and washing the vehicle)
  • Operate a variety of passenger buses on scheduled or special runs from one location to another
  • Interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day
  • Driver is required to maintain a current California Department of Transportation CDL License (License in resume or attached) OT) Class \"B\" with Passenger \"P\" endorsement Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
  • (Must be in resume or attached) Work Schedule: 40 hours a week - schedule may vary based on needs of the Service
  • Schedule will be discussed during interview 1st shift at 6:00am-2:30pm (1 position) and 2nd shift at 12:30pm-9:00pm (1 position)
