Summary

This position is in the Facilities Management Services "Grounds Department" of the Albany Stratton VAMC.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Potential eligibility is then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions - Specifications - etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly - Installation - and Repair - etc. Knowledge of Materials Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited based on time spent on appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Duties

  • Major duties and responsibilities will include: Operating small - medium - and heavy equipment for the purpose of maintaining facility grounds
  • Participate in the snow removal during normal and off shift duty hours
  • Perform preventative and interval maintenance on all assigned grounds equipment
  • Installing - modifying - and repairing furniture items - doors - windows - floor coverings - baseboards - and signage
  • Performing snow removal using vehicles for snow plowing - snow blowers - and shoveling
  • Keeping storage areas clean - orderly - and organized to maintain an accurate inventory of supplies - tools - and materials
  • Planning and measuring various materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions
  • Reading and interpreting work orders - instructions - sketches - blueprints - and building codes
  • Using and maintaining equipment and tools common to various trades
  • Performing preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function
  • Working with wood or wood substitute materials - gypsum board or fiber-cement board - concrete/rebar - glass - etc
  • Installing laminate and protective coverings on various surfaces
  • Laying concrete block brick and performing minor masonry repairs
  • Performing related duties as required

  • 8:00am - 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD05588A Physical Requirements: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending - lifting - crawling through restrictive areas - and working from ladders - scaffolding - and platforms both in- and outside buildings
  • The Maintenance Mechanic must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment
  • Assignments may require standing - stooping - kneeling - climbing - and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions
  • The Maintenance Mechanic works in all areas throughout the medical center
  • Inside areas may be dirty - dusty - and greasy and contain bad odors
  • The Maintenance Mechanic is subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds
  • exposed to moderately high noise levels
  • exposed to dust - fumes - and dirt
  • exposed to possible strains - cuts - electrical shock - bruises - burns - and infections
  • occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones
  • Outside duties are performed in all types of weather
  • The use of protective devices such as ear plugs - safety glasses - gloves - clothing - and safety equipment is required as needed.

Salary : $29 - $34
