Maintenance Mechanic

Summary

This position is located at the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks - Fayetteville - AR. This position performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings - grounds and related structures - fixtures - and utilities. Under the supervision of Engineering Service Leadership - the Maintenance Mechanic performs carpentry - electrical - mechanical and other duties in the maintenance and repair for various areas and serves as a team member of Engineering Service.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. Duties

• Major duties of this position include but are not limited to: Painting and refinishing furniture - wood and metal - such as desks - cabinets - chairs - operating rooms and laundry equipment
• Constructing and repairing a wide variety of structural items such as building frames - rafters - walls - staircases - door and window frames - interior and exterior trim - miscellaneous items such as workbenches - counter tops - bookcases - etc
• Installing - modifying and repairing new and existing - utility - supply and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage - water - oil and gas distribution systems - water closets - tubs - fire sprinkler systems and showers
• Installing new roofs - including metal flushing gutters and other roofing accessories - and repair or replace sheathing - boards - beams and joints
• Performing other related duties as assigned
• Work Schedule: Monday to Friday - 07:00am -3:30 pm (Subject to change based on the needs of the Agency)

• The person often works in portions of the utility systems requiring attention that are cramped - dirty and hard-to-reach locations
• The work may involve prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping - bending - kneeling - climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions
• The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools - equipment - ladders - scaffolding - parts and supplies up to 50 pounds
• Occasionally - the incumbent will be required to lift and carry items over 50 pounds
• Working Conditions Exposed to a full array of weather conditions
• Subject to danger of falling when working from ladders or hydraulic lifts
• Exposed to dust/dirt while mixing mortar and handling materials
• Work is performed in all areas of the hospital environment - inside and outside
• Work is often dirty - dusty and greasy
• The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as injury from power driven tools - falling from scaffolds and ladders - temperature extremes - noise - and bad weather conditions
• The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibilities of cuts - bruises - scratches - broken bones - and burns
• The individual is subject to asbestos exposure and chemicals which can cause burns or irritation to the skin
• Some duties may require the person to wear protective equipment and clothing that is heavy and uncomfortable.
