Summary

This Maintenance Mechanic position is located within the Facilities Management Services at the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in West Haven - CT. The employee performs a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings - grounds and related structures - fixtures - and utilities. The duties are performed within at least two trades.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Duties

• Major Duties include but are not limited to the following: Developing patterns and laying out - cutting - forming - joining - assembling - and installing items such as heating - air conditioning - and ventilating pipes
• conduits
• drying ovens

• control and flying surfaces
• metal furniture
• and other items with combined straight and curved edges or irregular curves and planes
• and Installing - maintaining - and repairing a variety of complex equipment - and systems involving power boilers with complicated components - critical requirements and rigid tolerances
• Installing modifying - repairing - maintaining - troubleshooting - testing - and loading new and existing electrical lines - circuits - systems - and associated fixtures - controls - and equipment
• Installing - recognizing the causes of faulty equipment and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating - cooling - humidifying - dehumidifying - cleaning - filtering and circulating
• Performing other related duties as assigned
