Summary

Incumbent is the primary and solitary full time Locksmith at the Audie L Murphy Division Medical Center in San Antonio - Texas. This position includes but is not limited duties at Kerrville - NWOPC - &/or any other locksmith requirements - assistance per CBOCs - other VA OPCs within a 65-miles radius.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: This position requires walking - standing - bending - lifting - carrying - pushing - and pulling moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds) - and occasionally heavier weights with assistance. Incumbent works from ladders - scaffolding - platforms - motorized high lift - etc. as well as other hard to reach places. Incumbent must be in good physical condition - have good eyesight with or without glasses and cannot be colorblind. WORK CONDITIONS: Work is normally accomplished in a climate-controlled environment - but at times works outside in heat or cold and in environments that are poorly light - cramped - and confined - dusty - or dirty and occasionally works at such heights as rooftops. Incumbent is subject to the danger of falling from ladders and scaffolds Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position - the job element method is used to match what you - the applicant - can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge - skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge - skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required - your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume. You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Equipment Assembly - Installation - Repair Interpret Instructions - Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Measuring Instruments Technical Practices (Electrical Electronic) Troubleshooting Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience.

Duties

  • ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION - YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include - but may not be limited to the following: Install - repair - and maintain locking systems Install and service mechanical and electronic locks on doors - windows - cabinets - lockers - and equipment Repair door hardware such as closers - hinges - panic devices - and latching systems Perform preventative maintenance to ensure reliability and security Keying - rekeying - and master key systems Perform pinning - rekeying - and master keying of various lock types (cylindrical - mortise - interchangeable core - etc.) Develop and maintain master key systems and key control records Cut and duplicate keys using codes or machines Safe and vault work Change combinations and service safes and vaults Maintain security for controlled storage areas (e.g. - medication/narcotics storage in VA facilities) Troubleshooting and repairs Diagnose lock malfunctions (worn pins - broken springs - jammed cylinders - etc.) Disassemble - repair - replace parts - and reassemble locking devices Remove broken keys or foreign objects from locks Installation and modification work Install new lock systems and modify doors or hardware for proper fit Perform minor carpentry/metal work to support lock installation Ensure proper alignment and function of locking mechanisms Emergency and service response Respond to lockouts and urgent repairs across the medical center Ensure all locks function properly to maintain patient safety and facility security Security and compliance responsibilities Maintain locks for high-security and sensitive areas Follow VA safety - security - and key control policies Support overall physical security program within the facility Work Schedule: Monday through Friday
