Summary

This position - located at the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service - serves as a Health Technician - responsible for performing a wide range of administrative functions - to include regulatory compliance for laboratory testing - clerical and other health technician functions.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 08/21/2026. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level of GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include - but are not limited to: Knowledge of management's objectives - goals - decisions and policies Knowledge of clinic organization - functions - specialties and programs - such as social work - nursing laboratory - supply business offices function - etc. Comprehensive working knowledge of applicable public laws - VA policy and regulations Knowledge of medical and administrative records systems - Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act and HIPPA as it relates to release of information on patients and protecting the privacy of patient information In-depth knowledge of College of American Pathology regulations on proficiency testing Ability to interpret rules - regulations - policies and procedures to make sound decisions using good judgment Ability to deal with a variety of individuals with tact and diplomacy Ability to complete assigned projects - studies - narrative and statistical reports and reviews in a thorough - accurate and timely manner Skill and precision in the use of the tools - materials and specialized laboratory equipment Knowledge of critical lab values and the procedure for documentation of follow-up care...OR - Education: Applicants may substitute education for qualifying experience. Applicants must have one (1) semester or nine (9) credit hours of graduate education directly related to the work of the position...OR - Combination: A combination of graduate education and specialized experience. The total percentage of specialized experience and education when added together must equal 100 percent to qualify an applicant for GS-06 (i.e. 3 credit hours and 8 months of specialized experience are equivalent to 1 year.) Duties

  • Major duties of this position include but are not limited to..
  • Protects computer data from unauthorized release or loss Enters and retrieves patient and specimen data via the computer system Participates in continuing medical education and keeps abreast of current technology Builds and generates daily phlebotomy collection lists and labels - separating by appointment schedule times Inspects specimens to determine suitability or appropriateness for the test requested Organizes day-to-day work-flow and resolves minor complaints and/or problems Prepares and packages tests for shipment Accurately identifies patients and specimens and collects the proper type blood specimen for a variety of laboratory tests from both inpatients and outpatients as needed Performs and distributes laboratory specimens to all laboratory sections in the prescribed manner within established guidelines Work Schedule: 7:00am - 3:30pm - Rotating weekends and holidays Position Description/PD#: Health Technician/PD12996A and PD12998A Relocation/Recruitment Incentives: Not Authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not Authorized English Language Proficiency
  • Health Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C.
