This position works under the general administrative supervision of the Supervisory Occupational Health and Safety Specialist (Safety Manager) within the Safety Section. This position serves as the Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS) Coordinator - working as a key member of the Hampton VAMC's Safety Department and as the Chair of the GEMS Committee.

This position is located at the Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC) - within the Safety Section of the Facilities Management Service (FMS). This position works under the general administrative supervision of the Supervisory Occupational Health and Safety Specialist (Safety Manager) within the Safety Section. This position serves as the Green Environmental Management Systems (GEMS) Coordinator - working as a key member of the Hampton VAMC's Safety Department and as the Chair of the GEMS Committee.
Duties
- Major Duties and Responsibilities to include but not be limited to: Coordinates the efforts of Hampton VAMC staff involved with GEMS in order to ensure that the GEMS program is developed and implemented in accordance with VHA and VAMC policies and guidance
- Ensures that the GEMS program shows continual improvement of the environmental programs at the Hampton VAMC
- Applies environmental science and engineering practices and technology in order to demonstrate the relationships between the operation of the VAMC and human health - ecosystems - environmental media - and natural resources
- Provides leadership and direction to management - professional - and technical personnel regarding the development and implementation of the GEMS at the Hampton VAMC
- Plans - organizes - implements - oversees - and provides technical assistance with projects in order to resolve environmental problems
- Assignments include - but are not limited to - domestic and industrial wastewater treatment and disposal
- safe drinking water requirements
- treatment - storage - and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous solid waste
- release of hazardous material/spill response
- air pollution control
- environmental media permitting
- toxic substances (hazardous waste and universal waste)
- and environmental regulatory oversight
- Manages the Hampton VAMC's environmental regulatory programs) and coordinates the efforts of Hampton VAMC organizations that relate to environmental matters
- Develops and implements environmental policies - procedures - and systems
- Advises management on how environmental policies - procedures - and systems affect the operation of the VAMC
- Evaluates - modifies - and implements pollution prevention alternatives in order to reduce the generation of waste
- Manages and/or provides - technical advice regarding responses to environmental emergencies - such as the release/spill of hazardous material(s)
- Facilitates the exchange of environmental information to VAMC staff
- This includes developing and implementing training and educational programs related to key environmental programs - safety - and industrial hygiene
- Develops and presents budgetary information related to environmental programs to upper level Hampton VAMC management
- Manages computer programs and databases in order to enhance the management of environmental programs

Salary : $75,788 - $98,530
