Summary

The Electronic Industrial Controls Mechanic serves as a journey-level controls technician responsible for installation - maintenance - calibration - modification - and troubleshooting of complex electronic industrial control systems supporting HVAC and building automation operations across the Atlanta VA Health Care System.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 04/10/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Electronics Equipment Assembly - Installation - Repair Ingenuity Interpret Instructions - Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Plan and organize work Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work requires standing - walking - bending - climbing - kneeling - and working from ladders - lifts - rooftops - and confined spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts and carries equipment or components up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier items with assistance. Fine-motor dexterity is required for wiring - calibration - and component adjustments. Working Conditions: Work is performed in mechanical rooms - ceiling spaces - rooftops - energized equipment environments - and temperature-extreme locations. Exposure occurs to electrical hazards - steam piping - rotating machinery - dust - noise - and intermittent poor lighting. Appropriate PPE is required.

Duties

  • The Electronics Mechanic duties include but are not limited to the following: Installing - maintaining - and repairing Building Automation System (BAS) and Direct Digital Control (DDC) components including controllers - I/O modules - sensors - actuators - and communication devices
  • Troubleshooting BAS/DDC communication failures - logic faults - device malfunctions - and network issues to restore proper system operation
  • Interpreting sequences of operation - ladder logic - function block logic - wiring diagrams - and HVAC control schematics to diagnose and correct system problems
  • Installing - adjusting - calibrating - and replacing electronic sensors and transducers such as temperature - humidity - differential pressure - airflow - CO2 - and other environmental control devices
  • Installing - maintaining - and troubleshooting variable frequency drives (VFDs) - motor control systems - and associated electronic components
  • Performing point-to-point testing - loop tuning - trend verification - alarm testing - and system calibration to ensure proper equipment response and stable building conditions
  • Installing - terminating - and repairing low-voltage control wiring - communication cabling - and grounding/shielding systems used in HVAC control networks
  • Maintaining and troubleshooting electronic - pneumatic - and hybrid control systems and their interfacing components
  • Testing - verifying - and repairing safety interlocks and HVAC-related safeties including freeze-stats - high/low limits - pressure safeties - emergency shutdown relays - and smoke control interfaces
  • Integrating HVAC controls with other systems including fire alarm - emergency power - boiler/chiller plant controls - and associated equipment
  • Performing commissioning and recommissioning of HVAC control systems - verifying proper point mapping - sequence execution - system trending - and alarm configuration
  • Utilizing advanced diagnostic tools including multimeters - manometers - digital calibrators - and signal generators to diagnose electronic control issues
  • Reading - interpreting - updating - and maintaining technical documentation including wiring diagrams - point lists - network topology diagrams - calibration records - and controls drawings
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 6:30am - 3:00pm
