Summary

This position is located in the Electric Shop of the Maintenance and Operations Section of the Engineering Service of the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS). The primary purpose of the Electrician position is to perform preventative maintenance - testing - and repairs on electrical equipment and systems located throughout the facility.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 06/04/2026. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Ability to Use Electrical Drawings Knowledge of Electrical Equipment Technical Practices (Theoretical - Precise - Artistic) Theory and Instruments (Electrical - Electronic) Used in Shop and Trade Practices Troubleshooting (Electrical) You must have a current - valid driver's license. A safe driving record is needed. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent works from ladders - scaffolding and hydraulic work platforms. He/she often works in portions of the electrical systems requiring attention that are in cramped - dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work involves prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping - bonding - kneeling - climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools - equipment - ladders - scaffolding - parts and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally - the incumbent will be required to lift and carry over 50 pounds. Electricians are exposed to a variety of weather conditions - both in winter and summer - in making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. The incumbent must give full consideration to patients - visitors and employees in the vicinity of the work area. During emergency repairs - extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot - dirty - dusty - greasy - poorly lit - cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally - the incumbent will be required to work in the vicinity of asbestos containing materials. The incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.

Duties

  • Major duties include: Installs - modifies - repairs - troubleshoots - preventatively maintains and tests complex electrical systems - circuits - equipment - appliances - controls - components - lighting fixtures and fire alarm systems Reads and interprets blueprints - wiring diagrams - schematics and operation and maintenance manuals
  • Traces and locates the cause of equipment and control device malfunctions and then complete repairs or adjustments
  • Cuts - threads - bends and installs rigid pipe and other conduit systems and a variety of other raceway systems
  • Maintains and repairs all electrical equipment including transformers - feeders - motors - generators - starters - overload and over current protectors and controllers
  • Completes basic troubleshooting of electronic control circuits on various equipment including laundry equipment - automatic door operators - dietetic equipment - rotary files - fire alarm systems - security systems - tray conveyors - and incinerators
  • Selects proper wire gauges - insulation - protective devices and switching for a variety of equipment - lighting and miscellaneous electrical loads
  • Uses all common electrical hand and power tools and testing equipment as required
  • Operates power hydraulic work platforms
