Summary

This position is located in the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the VA Western Colorado Health Care System (WCHCS) - which provides comprehensive health care services to Veterans across Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. The primary purpose of the position is to perform a wide range of maintenance and repair tasks in the upkeep of buildings - grounds - exterior structures - utilities - and related fixtures.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Decision Making Electrical Electrical Equipment Technical Practices (Electrical Electronic) Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work) Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. A Journeyman License is required.

Duties

  • Major Duties and Responsibilities include: Uses appropriate test equipment to prevent overloading
  • Utilizes all instruments correctly and equipment normally used by journeyman electricians
  • Ability to select and use appropriate hand - and power tools
  • Maintain - repair - and install electrical and electronic systems and equipment
  • Install - modify - repair - troubleshoot - test and check for proper voltage capacity - loading of wires and equipment - and balancing of loads
  • Installs - modifies - repairs - troubleshoots - and tests new and existing substations
  • Utilizes protection gear and general personal protective equipment (PPE) for work on electrical systems
  • Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations .Balances service loads over three phases
  • Pull conductors through raceway systems - phase out and make connections
  • Conducts annual tension/polarity tests on all electronic receptacles in patient care areas
  • Provides routing for conduits and wiring for electrical boxes - panels and equipment
  • Perform preventive maintenance and testing of complex electrical systems - circuits - equipment - appliances - controls - components - lighting fixtures - emergency electrical systems and back-up electrical systems
  • Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshoots high voltage (4 -160v) primary systems
  • A Journeyman License is required
  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 7:00am to 3:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD14669A Physical Requirements: Frequently carries and sets up supplies and equipment that weighs up to and above 50 pounds
  • Hoists - holders and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors - condensers and chillers
  • Makes repairs and installations from ladders - scaffolding and platforms where the parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to reach places
  • therefore - frequently stretching - bending and kneeling long periods of time
  • The incumbent frequently must move desks - loaded filing cabinets and other office equipment - beds - tables and otherward equipment to provide working space
  • Physical or muscular effort in performing duties includes fatigue producing actions such as painting overhead - lifting - pulling - pushing - stooping and working in cramped positions
  • Employee must work in an area with unpleasant fumes and thus wear a face mask to prevent injury or illness due to fumes and dust
  • Must work on ladders and scaffolds
