Summary

Incumbent is a carpenter assigned to the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System Construction Team. The carpenter performs a variety of construction and repair on buildings - structures and their components. Work also includes demolition - modification and renovation of various buildings. Incumbent will work on ongoing station level projects and all future projects planned and approved by management.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge - skills - and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element - which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: Equipment Assembly - Installation - Repair Interpret Instructions - Specifications (includes blueprint reading) Materials Measurement and Layout Technical Practices Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Without more than normal supervision Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Duties

  • Major duties include - but are not limited to: The Carpenter is skilled and knowledgeable in basic commercial institutional work at a journeyman level - working with wood as well as plastic - metal and other modern materials associated with the trade and builder's crafts
  • Typical work areas and items include total remodel of assign construction space - minor repairs and maintenance to door and builder's hardware - windows - metal screens and frames - interior trim - handrails - railings - and protective guards - equipment supports - bracing and brackets - vinyl and other floor coverings - wood and metal anchors - acoustical ceiling tile - insulation - weather stripping - caulking - sealing - waterproofing and thresholds - shelving - racks - cabinets - and casework - curtain and IV tracks - chalkboards - tack boards and display boards - interior signs - tapes - frame construction - decorations - over bed tables - instrument stands - beds and other clinical - ward and office equipment and furniture - mirrors - towel and tissue holders dispensers - and bathroom accessories
  • Possess the skills and knowledge associated with metal/wood wall construction - drywall installation - bedding - taping and floating
  • The Carpenter must be able to read - use and interpret a variety of specifications - drawings - sketches and notes - and must have and utilize a thorough knowledge of basic shop mathematics and mechanics
  • Applications normally involve routine and standard instructions - templates - samples and replacement items
  • The carpenter must continually and maintain a current knowledge by keeping abreast of new techniques and equipment
  • The Carpenter uses a variety of both power and non-power tools - and occasionally uses large fixed shop equipment such as saws - drill press - grinders - etc. - and practices good operator care and maintenance of the equipment - including minor adjustments
  • Incumbent performs maintenance on required equipment as assigned
  • The employee brings tools - equipment and materials - appropriate to work assignments to and from work areas and shop - and to shop storage areas - keeps shop - work areas - and equipment clean - secure and orderly - observes safe practices - and safety and properly removes and disposes of waste debris and excess materials
  • The employee performs other related duties as assigned and may be required to become familiar with some of the functions - procedures - methods and skills of other related work and assists in those functions in the absence of other personnel
  • Work Schedule: Monday-Friday
  • 7:30am - 4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD06807A Physical Requirements: The incumbent performs a variety of tasks requiring moderate physical exertion such as lifting - pushing - carrying - climbing - bending - stooping - crawling and negotiation in confined spaces
  • The carpenter will be required to work off high ladders - scaffolding and bucket truck as occasionally necessary
  • The incumbent will be standing or walking most of the time and must be in very good overall physical condition and be able to lift 40 pounds.

Salary : $27 - $32
