Accounting Technician

Summary

This position is located within the Fiscal Service office supporting accounting operations for the Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Shreveport - Louisiana.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-6 level - you must meet the following: Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the federal service that has given you the particular knowledge - skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of an Accounting Technician. For this Accounting Technician - GS-6 position: Possess one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge - skills - and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position - and that is typically in or related to the work of this Accounting Technician position. To be creditable - this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: performing accounting principles - methods - procedures and techniques; validating transactions; examining accounts to analyze and detect trends and; problems; using various accounting system software package applications and computer systems to resolve problems of processed transactions; and using spreadsheets. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Duties

• ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION - YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties encompassing classifying accounting transactions
• maintaining and reconciling accounts
• closing accounts and preparing reports and statements
• and analyzing accounting data
• and examining accounts
• Additionally - establishing and updating Veteran banking account information in the multiple systems - and manage/reconcile the cash bank accounts through to Treasury
• Duties and Responsibilities: Balances and reconciles reports - statements - summaries and trial balances with supporting accounting data on daily/weekly/monthly/yearly basis constituting a complete reconciliation
• Initiates corrective action to reconcile records
• Receives and reviews a wide variety of obligation documents to include purchase orders - contracts - travel orders and similar documents for obligation against appropriated funds
• Reviews documents accuracy and regulatory compliance to ensure they are authorized in accordance with regulations - charged to the applicable appropriation and that funds are available to cover obligation
• Obligates documents and summarizes the information and enters data into the appropriate automated system
• Reconciles and reviews all transaction accounting classifications to ensure they were input properly into the various accounting systems
• Notes discrepancies and follows up to clarify and correct
• Verifies input to computer to close accounts and provide financial statements by abstracting data from a variety of source documents
• Assigns the appropriate action codes verifies block totals - determines the correct accounting classification - and ensures manageability and processing efficiency
• Advises Lead Accounting Technician or higher graded accountants of extraordinary or recurring problems
• Analyzes - codes - and processes all types of accounting transactions involving various types of funds ensuring the accuracy and completeness of information provided in accordance with regulatory requirements
• Performs other duties assigned
• Work Schedule: Monday-Friday
• 8:00am-4:30pm (Work schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the facility)
