Reporting to: Staff Scientist

Your role in the mission:

In this role you will help to implement novel computational workflows for the design and analysis of the electromagnets of our stellarator fusion reactors. You will work closely with our team of applied mathematician and computational physicists, as well as our coil engineers, to further automate our computational pipelines for coil optimization, validation, and develop novel algorithms to increase the efficiency and accuracy of these computations.


Experience in scientific computing, python, high performance computing, and numerical optimization is expected, as is experience with distributed version control software (e.g. Github), and with Jax, C and Fortran.


Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with our coil design teams to define optimal computational pipeline architectures for coil optimization, analysis and validation.
  • Develop efficient codes to automate these computational pipelines.
  • Implement novel algorithms to accelerate these computational pipelines and to increase the fidelity of our coil models.
  • Apply these new codes to the design of electromagnets for our fusion pilot plant designs.
  • Develop GitHub actions for building and releasing software, documentation, and unit testing.
  • Present your results in regular meetings with your close collaborators, and in wider meetings with the Applied Physics team and the Engineering Coil Design team.
  • Document your progress within the company’s documentation system.

What you'll need:

  • Master’s degree in computer science, scientific computing, or applied/numerical mathematics.
  • At least 2 years of industry experience in engineering or applied physics, or a doctorate in computer science, scientific computing, or applied/numerical mathematics focused on applied physics and engineering applications.
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Proficiency in Linux.
  • Experience with Jax
  • Experience in using git and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with C or Fortran is desirable.
  • Experience with efficient algorithms for uncertainty quantification is desirable.
  • Experience with efficient machine learning algorithms is desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and closely with senior colleagues.
