About The Role
As a Progression Mentor, you will provide dedicated, holistic support to learners across the college, ensuring their engagement, progression, and wellbeing are prioritised. You’ll play a key role in improving attendance, academic outcomes, and personal development through proactive intervention and advocacy.
Your work will focus on supporting learners with mental health challenges, complex social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, and those with caring responsibilities. You’ll collaborate with internal teams and external agencies to create a positive, inclusive learning environment.
What You’ll Do
Tyne Coast College comprises South Tyneside College, Tyne Metropolitan College and South Shields Marine School.
We offer a vast range of educational opportunities for those aged 14 to adults - including a wide range of employer-led vocational programmes, Apprenticeships, Higher Education and specialist maritime training.
Our portfolio is multi-award winning, with national accolades and a global outstanding reputation for maritime provision. The College has a high performing SEND provision which has been recognised nationally and is a regional specialist in teaching and learning for learners with SEN. The college was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in February 2024.

What You’ll Do
- Build strong, trusting relationships with learners to identify and overcome barriers to success.
- Develop tailored mentoring and support plans for learners with diverse needs.
- Deliver engaging group sessions on wellbeing, resilience, and personal development.
- Monitor attendance and academic progress, intervening early to prevent disengagement.
- Work closely with safeguarding teams to ensure learners are safe and supported.
- Advocate for learners in multi-agency meetings and disciplinary processes.
- Maintain accurate records and evaluate the impact of support strategies.
- Essential Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to de-escalate challenging situations, and experience in planning and delivering group sessions.
- Qualifications: English and Maths at Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) and a Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care or a related field.
- Experience: Proven background in supporting learners with mental health challenges and SEMH needs, plus experience in educational or support settings.
- Desirable: Degree-level qualification, conflict resolution skills, and knowledge of trauma-informed practice.
