Responsibilities

This is a ten-month faculty position responsible to the Dean, Nursing and Health Sciences, Department Chair, and Program Director, Associate Degree Nursing. Responsible to prepare and deliver Associate Degree Nursing coursework in engaging, innovative and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to unity, caring, integrity, empowering, and excellence. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare and teach courses in the field of nursing to a diverse and multicultural student population based on the department’s approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies as appropriate to the needs of students and the standards of the discipline.
  • Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and departmental governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review/evaluation, accreditation standards, assessment of student learning outcomes, and other departmental duties.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
  • Keep accurate records of students’ attendance, progress, and performance.
  • Contact clinical facility assigned and plan rotation for assigned clinical group(s), provide direct supervision of students practicing in the clinical setting, and evaluate students’ performance.
  • Supervise all initial nursing procedures performed by the student in the clinical area and establish competence before allowing the student to perform a nursing procedure without direct faculty member supervision.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and enforcement of standards/policies for admission, progression, probation, and dismissal of students, and participation in academic guidance and counselling.
  • Serve as a mentor to students in the Nursing program.
  • Serve as a Team Leader during appropriate period of assignment.
  • Assist with orientation of new faculty and serve as a mentor to new faculty as needed.
  • Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
  • Support department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and planning.
  • Serve on college wide and departmental committees, councils, work groups, and task forces.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by dean, department chair, program director.

Professional Standards

  • Appropriate use of the college’s learning management system.
  • Meet deadlines for attendance reporting and course grades.
  • Begin classes and labs on time and promptly notify the appropriate instructional administrator in the event of an unscheduled absence.
  • Participate in pinning, graduation, convocation, and other official college functions.
  • Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.
  • Attend and participate in college wide, campus, department, or other activities and meetings.
  • Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.
  • Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in nursing
  • Must hold a current license or privilege to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Texas
  • Three (3) years of recent, varied nursing experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Must be computer literate and willing to utilize latest multi-media technologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching experience

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Maintain student-centered methodology and classroom procedures

  • Work to provide an instructional environment based in professionalism and integrity by explaining what is required of students regarding behavior, communication, and academic integrity
  • Be encouraging, trustworthy, confident and compassionate toward students so that they always feel you are present and working to help them succeed in graduating with their certificate or degree
