Responsibilities
- Assist the special education teacher in implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
- Provide direct support to students in academic settings, including one-on-one and small group instruction.
- Help students with daily living skills, including personal care and social interactions.
- Monitor and document student progress and behavior, reporting any concerns to the teacher.
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other staff to develop and adapt instructional materials.
- Support students during transitions between classes, lunch, and recess.
- Maintain a safe and positive learning environment by enforcing classroom rules and expectations.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in special education.
- Assist with the preparation of classroom materials and organization of the learning space.
- Foster positive relationships with students, families, and staff to support student success.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent; Requires two years of college, an AA degree, or successfully completed the ParaPro Assessment (Praxis Exam).
- Experience working with children, particularly those with special needs, is highly desirable.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with students and colleagues.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students with diverse learning needs.
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Basic knowledge of special education laws and practices is a plus.
- Proficiency in using technology and educational software to support learning.
- Must pass background checks and other pre-employment requirements as mandated by the school district.
This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The employment “at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and approved by the Board of Trustees of District 411.
All recommendations for hire are tentative offers. Employment is contingent upon board approval, and successful completion of a federal background check and drug-free workplace pre-employment screening.
