School Social Worker and Behavior Intervention

Position Summary

The Behavior Interventionist / School Social Worker serves in a dual role designed to support the social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs of students across the school.

Fifty percent (0.5 FTE) of the position is dedicated to providing proactive behavioral interventions and social-emotional support within the general education setting. This includes consulting with teachers, providing individual and small-group interventions, supporting PBIS and restorative practices, and helping students develop skills for success in the classroom.

The remaining fifty percent (0.5 FTE) serves as the school's licensed School Social Worker within Special Education. Responsibilities include participating in Child Find, providing IEP services, assisting with Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), providing crisis intervention, collaborating with families and community agencies, and ensuring compliance with state and federal special education requirements.

Working collaboratively with administrators, teachers, families, and related service providers, this position promotes student well-being, removes barriers to learning, and helps foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.

Job Duties:Behavioral Intervention & Student Support

• Assist in the development and implementation of school-wide behavior systems and positive behavior supports.
• Facilitate data-based decision making for students demonstrating behavioral, emotional, or social concerns.
• Collect and analyze behavioral data to identify students needing intervention.
• Develop and implement evidence-based behavioral interventions for individual students and small groups.
• Facilitate individual and small group social skills groups.
• Monitor student progress and adjust interventions based on data.
• Support implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and restorative practices.
• Participate in Student Support Team, School-Wide Support Team, Special Education meetings, and staff meetings.
• Complete student progress reports as necessary.

Special Education Services

• Participate in Child Find activities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary evaluation teams.
• Contribute to IEP development by recommending appropriate behavioral and social-emotional supports.
• Recommend direct and indirect social work services when appropriate.
• Monitor progress toward behavioral and social-emotional IEP goals.
• Maintain accurate special education documentation and service logs.

Consultation & Collaboration

• Consult with teachers to develop effective classroom interventions.
• Collaborate with families to support student success at school and home.
• Coordinate with community agencies and outside providers to connect families with resources.
• Collaborate with attendance teams to address chronic absenteeism and school engagement.
• Provide consultation regarding trauma-informed practices, mental health, and behavioral supports.
• Empower families through education and resource navigation.

Crisis Response

• Provide crisis intervention services for students as needed.
• Conduct suicide risk, self-harm, and threat assessments according to district procedures.
• Coordinate appropriate follow-up supports and referrals.
• Fulfill mandated reporting responsibilities and provide consultation regarding student safety concerns.

Professional Leadership

• Provide professional development for teachers, educational assistants, and other staff.
• Support implementation of school-wide social-emotional learning initiatives.
• Assist in developing school-wide behavioral systems and procedures.
• Maintain accurate records, intervention data, evaluation documentation, and parent communication.
• Communicate effectively with students, families, educators, administrators, and community partners.
• Create and maintain positive professional relationships with families and staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Commitment to TCGIS's mission, vision, values, and strategic goals.
• Experience working with kids.
• Active Minnesota School Social Worker License (or eligibility for licensure).
• Knowledge of evidence-based behavioral interventions for students K–8.
• Knowledge of special education procedures and IDEA requirements.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Experience working with students with social-emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs.
• Eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
• Experience with Restorative Practices.
• Experience with trauma-informed educational practices.
• Experience with objective behavioral measurement and progress monitoring.
• German language ability preferred.

Working Conditions

• Physical Ability: Tasks may involve extended periods at a keyboard or workstation.
• Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
• Some tasks require oral communication ability.

Working Hours

Regular hours for full-time employees are 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Staff receive one full week off for fall break, two full weeks for winter break, one full week for spring break, and all federally recognized holidays.

Salary/Benefits

Salary will be commensurate with experience and applicable collective bargaining agreements. Eligible employees working 30 or more hours per week receive medical, dental, life, and long-term disability insurance according to TCGIS benefit offerings.
