Automation Technician – Controls Design Description
Our client is seeking an Automation Technician to join their team in York, PA. This role supports the design, build, and test of electrical systems for custom industrial machinery, with a focus on control panels, electrical schematics, troubleshooting, and controls integration throughout assembly, testing, and startup. The ideal candidate has experience not only building and wiring systems, but also contributing to electrical design activities, modifying schematics, selecting components, and helping solve broader controls and automation challenges. This is a newly created position as the company continues to invest in bringing key electrical and controls capabilities back in-house, offering the opportunity to help shape processes, support electrical system development, and influence how systems are built and supported moving forward. Automation Technician – Controls Design Responsibilities
• Build, wire, and rework industrial control panels and machine assemblies
• Interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams; verify continuity and accurate connections
• Perform functional testing (I/O checks, sensors, motors, VFDs, safety circuits)
• Troubleshoot electrical and controls issues during assembly, testing, and startup
• Determine root cause and implement solutions
• Support PLC/HMI integration through I/O verification, device setup, and basic diagnostics
• Install and terminate field devices and route wiring per standards
• Maintain accurate documentation, including redlines, schematics, and parts lists
• Support commissioning activities and provide technical guidance to internal teams as needed
Automation Technician – Controls Design Qualifications
• Hands-on experience building industrial control panels from schematics
• Experience creating or modifying electrical schematics and supporting the development of industrial control systems
• Experience selecting, evaluating, or specifying electrical components for control systems
• Strong ability to diagnose electrical issues at the system level
